THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. –The Deadly Decoy Affair- 1965

This is the 15th episode of 1964 to 1968 spy series, THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. The series ran for a total of 105 episodes. The first season was filmed in black and white with the remainder shot in colour. Robert Vaughn plays agent Napoleon Solo while David McCallum plays Illya Kuryakin. Leo G Carroll plays Mister Waverly, the boss of the secret agency known as U.N.C.L.E. (United Network Command for Law & Enforcement) Their main enemy is THRUSH, an organization out to take over the planet.

UNCLE agents, Robert Vaughn and David McCallum are assigned to escort a captured THRUSH higher up to Washington. At the same time, Leo G. Carroll will be taking a decoy by armoured car by a different route to Washington. Sure enough, THRUSH makes an attack on the armoured car. The armoured car and its cargo barely escape, but they continue under a heavy Police escort.

Vaughn and McCallum now calmly escort their man out the building and into a waiting taxi. They are heading to the airport to hop a flight to Washington. Surprise, surprise, THRUSH has not been fooled by the UNCLE ploy. They make a play to take out Vaughn and McCallum and retrieve their prisoner.

Vaughn and McCallum however manage to evade the THRUSH attempt and hustle their prisoner, Ralph Taeger, into a high end dress store. They hide out while waiting for THRUSH to leave the area. They soon are flushed out by THRUSH and again barely escape. They have however picked up a fourth, Joanna Moore. Moore, a customer in the dress shop, has been handcuffed to Taeger in error. The handcuff keys were lost during the escape.

Vaughn and company decide that taking a train to D.C. might be safer than trying for the airport. Twenty minutes into the train ride and THRUSH rears its head with another attempt to snatch Taeger.

Agent Vaughn hot-foots it with Taeger and Moore into the countryside, leaving McCallum to shoot it out with the THRUSH types. After spending the night at the home of an Amish couple, they borrow a horse and buggy and continue to D.C. They do not get far as THRUSH finally captures the trio. Taeger decides not to kill Vaughn or Moore, he tells the THRUSH minions to just toss them in the car for later interrogation.

The always capable, Vaughn, manages to turn the tables on the THRUSH help and recaptures Taeger. Now Vaughn, Taeger and Miss Moore drive into D.C. for the meeting. This idea goes sideways when THRUSH again shows up at the transfer point. (We now find out there is a tracker placed in Taeger's arm. This of course explains why THRUSH always seemed able to trap them)

To cut to the quick, there is a shootout with several THRUSH agents and Taeger is again recaptured. Now they are joined by McCallum and the boss, Carroll. Vaughn is informed that the man, Taeger, is really the decoy and Carroll had the real THRUSH boss. As an added bonus, UNCLE has captured the THRUSH leader assigned to free the real Taeger.

Miss Moore is happy as hell as she now gets a holiday and a new wardrobe all paid for by UNCLE.

This is a very enjoyable episode that blends plenty of action with just the right amount of tongue in cheek dialogue. A winner!

Warning: Spoilers
Sorry to the previous review, but I found this episode to be a loser.

Decoys usually make for interesting stories but this one fails to do so as it becomes quite confusing to discover who the decoy and real THRUSH agent are. To make things more amazing, both Solo, the suave, debonair character and the straight laced serious Ilya are kept in the dark.

Naturally, a pretty blond enters the picture and in this case she is on the train. Of course, she becomes part of the action even though she is not an agent for either side and is condemned to death by the supposed THRUSH agent. By the way, what was he going to testify about in Washington, D.C.?

The Amish couple steal the episode when they give lodging to Solo, Ilya and the "agent." Along with the blond, thinking they're married, they set up a bedroom as a honeymoon suite for the "couple."
