Kelly 'The Hustler' Bundy
frankfob9 February 2012
***SPOILER***

Kelly asks Al for $1000 for a gown for her modeling school and, of course, she doesn't get it. Several days later, however, she's not only managed to get the $1000 for the gown but some more besides. A suspicious Al follows Kelly one night when she goes out, dressed in a short and tight leather dress, and discovers that she's making the money by using her heretofore unknown talent for hustling pool. Al is about to yank her out of the pool hall when the local pool shark plops down $10,000 and says he can "beat any girl in the house!"

This is a very funny episode in which Christina Applegate really shines. She not only looks volcanically hot in her leather outfit but manages at the same time to, much like Marilyn Monroe did, project a childlike innocence and vulnerability that almost overshadows her blatant sexuality. Applegate's timing is really quite impressive; she is one of the few truly beautiful women who can do comedy so well that she makes it look easy, when it's actually very hard work.

If you haven't seen this one yet, do so. It's definitely worth it.

Kelly calibrates her angles.

The first genuinely great episode of season 6, Cheese, Cues, and Blood sees Kelly hustling at a pool hall, with Jefferson acting as her manager. Curious about how his daughter has been earning big bucks so quickly, Al tracks her down and tries to take her home; however, when a pool shark called Slick Stick Jackson bets $10K that he can beat Kelly, Al goes out and sells his blood to raise the necessary stakes.

What follows is a masterclass in comedy from Ed O'Neill: delirious from selling so much plasma, Al talks total gibberish, providing the episode with most of the funny lines ("Oooh, oooh, pretty colours... Hey, why does everything look like noodles in here?"). He also brings this episode to its inevitable downbeat close, collapsing onto the pool table and blocking Kelly's winning shot.

Kelly looks great wearing a tight, black leather dress, which makes Al suspect that she has been spanking elderly men for money; his suspicions are compounded when he enters the pool hall and is told "She just finished off some guy. If you want a piece of the action, go ask her manager". Hilarious!
