Mary goes to Lou because she feels her talents are being wasted. She has just requisitioned some paper clips and sees no challenge to her job. She goes to see Lou and he agrees, so he gives her a crummy job he would have had to do. She is to fire the old sportscaster and hire a new one. The firing is hilarious as the guy thinks she is coming on to him. Meanwhile, back at the station, Ted is going to do the sports until the new guy is hired. He walks stiff legged because he has purchased a pair of "conquistador" boots. There are all sorts of sight gags going on. Mary is now faced with hiring a sportscaster. She takes this task so seriously that she can't sleep at night. She hires a very competent, handsome guy and he does just fine, although his first night all he does is read three scores. Mary falls apart. All her work, listening to all those tapes, has led to this. Three scores. She goes into Lou's office beside herself, and it's hilarious. He tells her that all we are is meaningless dust in the vast universe, worth nothing and nothing we do matters. She leaves the office, tears falling, saying, "I feel so much better." The incredible timing of the two characters make this so precious.

Mary is tired of being of go-fer for "piddly" things like tweezers, paper clips, etc., so she asks Lou for more responsibility. He gives a tough assignment: hire a new sports editor. Unfortunately, that also means firing the current one, "Ed Cavanaugh" (Dick Gautier). He's an idiot, tries to make moves on Mary, and so that didn't turn as badly as Mary feared. In the end, she was glad to fire his butt.

The guy she eventually selects is a good guy, it appears.I suspect we'll see more of him in future episodes. It wouldn't surprise if Mary began dating him.

Little humorous things in this episode include Rhoda faking interest Mary being a former head cheerleader; Ted and his new platform shoes which he thinks will make him look better as the fills in as the interim sports anchor; Lou giving Mary his view of life (which is really a pitiful outlook) and "Andy Rivers" making his debut as the new sportscaster.

Ted and his weird "high heels" might have been the funniest part, thanks also in part to remarks made by Lou and Murray about the shoes.

Mary requests, and is given, more challenging responsibilities, which she takes very seriously. After a couple of blunders she is ultimately successful but collapses in defeat when the result of all that work seems like a big anticlimax.

Several relatable situations are explored here in a funny way. An unsympathetic Ted has some great comic bits.
