Temptation
JordanThomasHall3 October 2019
The corn crop is coming in and Sam is looking for a couple of farmhands to help harvest it. Andy suggests using ex-prisoners after his talk with the warden of the county prison about giving them another chance in life. Sam convinces a reluctant Aunt Bee to accept the men on the farm. Andy introduces Sam to reformed gambler Harry "Lucky" Davis (character actor Herbie Faye) and pickpocket Charley "Fingers" Wilson (Lewis Charles). After harvesting corn, Sam gives the men his truck and $20 to run errands. Among the tasks is filling the truck with gas, where Millie is filling in and shows them the help-yourself tin can to deposit the money. Emmett asks the men to run his fix-it shop while he's called away. The temptation is building for "Lucky" and "Fingers". Aunt Bee is entrusted the $500+ her women's club collected for a swimming pool and hides it in the cookie jar, leery of the men. They join everyone in church to hear Reverend Tucker's (William Keene) sermon on "the brotherhood of man". While the men's voices are way off-key, their singing of "Bringing in the Sheeves" is perfect in the heart. When they run off with the money and car, however, the worst is feared.

A very nice, feel-good episode.

Herbie Faye & Lewis Charles carry the episode.
vitoscotti7 October 2023
This episode was a step up with veteran actors Herbie Faye and Lewis Charles returning to Mayberry as their usually crook roles. They have to be two of the least threatening bad guys Hollywood has created. Both nail their parts each time they've been casted as here.

Some mild funniness how the two bad guys respond to the town's laid back and trusting ways. Sam Jones (Ken Berry) is a real dope here inviting the crooks into his home with also use of his vehicles. Millie Swanson (Arlene Golonka) was stunning dressed to kill in church with her hair pulled back. Andy Griffith makes a welcome but awkward appearance with excuses of where AWOL Opie and Helen are this time. Not a great sitcom episode but not bad for the weak Mayberry RFD.
