Better Than Expected

Warning: Spoilers
During a robbery, Capt. Greer ends up shooting and killing one of the perps. To de-stress, he vacations at an upscale lodge and hits it off with a lovely female guest, played by Laraine Stephens. But one of the robbers has tailed Greer there and definitely has revenge on his mind. Greer starts having 'Nam-like flashbacks, hallucinations and what looks like a heart attack.

Once it became clear this was going to be a Greer-centric episode with our trio pushed to the background, I didn't think it would be any good - like when CHARLIE'S ANGELS put Bosley in the spotlight. But this is actually one of the better offerings of Season 4 so far.

I'll admit I saw the twist coming about half-way through, reasoning "If something's too good to be true, it probably is". Stephens has a memorable meltdown scene that's a little campy. This episode would have been a bit better if Julie had decked her!

There are some fun small moments, like seeing an almost unrecognizable Julie in a dark wig; the perps' van looking exactly like SCOOBY DOO's Mystery Machine; and seeing Jean Byron back on the small screen - in a small part - five years after THE PATTY DUKE SHOW ended. Her headband-and-flip-do is exactly what Patty was wearing back in 1964.

SPOTLIGHT ON TIGE ANDREWS
tcchelsey26 March 2023
The Chief, Tige Andrews, was actually named Tiger in real life by his parents. Before MOD SQUAD he gained famed on the THE DETECTIVES in the early 60s, the partner to tough cop Robert Taylor. Andrews said in later years that he was so proud of the MOD SQUAD and that it was still alive in reruns decades later. He's the whole show here, and to note, this was an episode ahead of its time. Captain Greer shoots and kills a robbery suspect, and can't get the incident out of his mind. It was one of a few episodes at the time to seriously deal with traumatized cops. Tige Andrews is excellent here and may have earned an Emmy nod for his performance. Greer decides to take some time off to relax and meets mystery lady Larraine Stevens at a lakeside resort. Now someone is targeting him and he's poisoned. Hmmm? Stevens played this type of role in many cop shows. Is she a friend or foe? Stevens always reminded me of Anne Francis. A memorable supporting cast with Jean Byron (Patty Duke's tv mom) and Tom Collins (Mike's boss on the BRADY BUNCH) as a fun couple who pair up with Tige and Larraine. Note Paramount began using Chevrolets in all their series and Tige and Larraine are cruising in a sleek green Impala, just before he gets a major attack. It also looks like he did the stunt as the Chevy jumps a curve and they go skidding into a parking lot. A well done scene, especially if he was driving. Peggy Lipton goes under cover, sporting a dark wig, a thing she did in a previous episode and truly looks like another person. This episode definitely has its moments, and a little bit creepy. SEASON 4 EPISODE 8 dvd box set.
