Foster Brooks and Susan Howard
kevinolzak6 January 2014
Everybody shines in "Monkees Manhattan Style," which finds the group hoping to star in a Broadway musical if they can secure producer Baker's backer. They try to hold on to their hotel room before the manager (Philip Ober) can evict them, while next door are a pair of newlyweds constantly being interrupted. Micky was never funnier, whether impersonating a quack doctor or a chic sheik, who believes the theatre is immoral...along with all his wives! The most notable cast member is 'lovable lush' Foster Brooks, in typical form as a boozy member of the 'Rabbit Breeders Convention,' who spends all his time in the bar waiting until his still-occupied room is ready. The groom, who has trouble opening a bottle of champagne, is played by Geoffrey Deuel (brother of Peter, from ALIAS SMITH AND JONES), while the pretty bride is played by Susan Howard, in only her second TV appearance, remembered for DALLAS and STAR TREK's "Day of the Dove" (as the first female Klingon). The butler at the Millionaire's Club is Doodles Weaver, brother of Pat, uncle of Sigourney, who offers priceless reactions to all The Monkees' impersonations. This is the second appearance for Nesmith's "The Girl I Knew Somewhere," the third and last for Neil Diamond's "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)," but the sole performance of the original Boyce and Hart production of their own "Words" (from Aug 15 1966), soon to be rerecorded by new producer Chip Douglas for the fourth LP, PISCES AQUARIUS CAPRICORN & JONES LTD (and B-side to fourth single "Pleasant Valley Sunday"). This slightly slower take, like the more familiar version, has both Micky and Peter sharing the lead vocals. Broadcast no. 30 (Apr 10 1967), "Monkees in Manhattan" was completed months earlier, 17th in production (Oct 5-7 1966).

Unconventional Monkees Episode, It's Really Good!
verbusen30 May 2008
Warning: Spoilers
If you were to play a Monkees episode for someone who never saw the show before, this may be a decent one for the Gen X'ers and younger (forget those older!). Why do I say that>? It's got a mid show impromptu interview and lot's of their music, I figure 3 musical interludes some that resemble what's going on now in alt rock music videos with the guys jumping over a fountain somewhere, probably some apartment building, just your kind of youtube.com moment aka guys dancing on walk-master's. Preston Foster is also in this one, in one of his earliest TV appearances, thats kind of cool on it's own. I was really surprised by this one, expecting the same old kind of tired formula, this one was radical, I guess from the second season, I vaguely remember watching the second season episodes as a kid in the early 70's when they wold show it in the early afternoon on Saturdays as part of a tie in to the cartoon lineup. Seeing those guys in concert in actual live footage was at first confusing to me but I dug it man. I hated all those like my older Brother who bad mouthed the Monkees but I'm happy to say that they were really cool to have the guts to changed the format and at least try not to be forever typecast as a "kiddie" group. Good for them, compared to what's out there in Alt rock now, it looks like a lot is still getting borrowed just by watching this one episode. Way to go Davy, Michael, Peter, and Mickey (I did those names by heart, you guys are great), Thanks!
