Escape from Welfare Island
sol-kay15 July 2013
***SPOILERS*** 24 year old Lorraine, Sandy Dennis, has been living and working a a nurse helper at the Welfare Island hospital for the last ten years since her parents, both foreign missionaries in e Guinea, passed away from a fatal illness that they contracted from her. Unknown to Lorraine that even though she's immune to the illness she's still carrying it an can infect anyone, or the 2% of the population that aren't immune to it, that she's comes close to with it being 70% fatal to those, the 2% of the population, unlucky to catch it off her: Please excuse the slight confusing in wanting to keep all the facts in focus. Wanting to go out, that's out of Welfare Island, an see the world Lorraine decides to take a stroll across the 59th Street Bridge into Manhattan without her fully realizing the ticking time bomb that she is.

With the news from the Welfare Island Hospital that there's a fatal disease carrier on the loose the NYPD go into action in order to track her down before she unwitting kills anyone by infecting them at being in close quarters with them. The first person Lorraine come in contact with who eventually end up dead, by him being one of the unlucky 2%, is wise guy and ladies man Phil Carsho, Anthony Zerbe, who takes her out to a dance then takes Lorraine to his pad for an evening fun & games. Trying to get away from the grouping Carsho Lorraine runs into a neighbor's apartment that of the sweet and sensitive tenant Allen Whochant, Peter Morelli, who invites the frighten young women into his pad for a quite chat about 19th century English Literature.

Allen who looks like a cross between a young Marlon Brando with his sexy and tight fitting gray T-shirt in the film "A Streetcar Name Desire" and at the same time a fit and tan Frankie Avalone in one of his Bikini Beach Bingo movies is quit a nice guy that Lorraine quickly falls for. The only problem is that Allen has some serious problems of his own. He's a shut-in who's terrified to go outside of his apartment in the unfounded fear that he would be kidnapped and either brain washed or experimented by foreign agents from the USSR or Commnist China or aliens from outer space. Or that's the opinion I came to in analyzing his strange and bizarre behavior.

***SPOILERS*** The police lead by Det. Adam Flint, Paul Burke, and the head of the Welfare Island Hospital Dr. Sorensteen, Bruce Gordon, finally catch up with bewildered and scared, she doesn't know what all this fuss about her is all about, Lorraine who is finally convinced by Allen, who by now got over his phobia in being locked into his apartment, to go back to Welfare Island Hospital before she infects anyone else. It seems that Det. Flint Dr. Sorensteen and Allen Whochent were of the 98% of the population that were not effected by her fatal illness. Even though Lorraine's brief stay in the "Big Apple", Manhattan, turned out to be fatal one for the womanizing Phil Carsho it would have been a lot worse to many New Yorkers if she wasn't caught on time, in less then 24 hours, and her stay lasted much longer by her getting too close to and infecting thousands of them.
