Sets Comedy Back
Hitchcoc27 September 2019
When a standup comedy friend of Dick's shows up, Joanna is furious. She can't stand this guy. Dick says he helped get him into writing by buying seven jokes at a dollar apiece. He is terrible and talks Dick into letting him do his act in the dining room. The material is awful so he bombs, plus most of the audience are the regulars on the show. Even they begin to leave. It's uncomfortable as Dick tries to talk kindly to him and get him to forget about it. It's an average episode.

The Dick Van Dyke Show Supplies Another Episode
grnwltr-1121217 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is the 2nd DVDS episode (that I have located) that has been "borrowed" by another series. Everybody Loves Raymond's episode, "The Children's Book", utilized almost verbatim the DVDS episode, "See Rob Write...". This episode of Newhart borrows liberally from the DVDS episode, "Stretch Petrie vs Kid Schenk". The originals far surpass the copies.

But Seriously...

An old friend of Dick's, a no talent comedian named Manny Silver, wants to try out his act in the inn's dining room.

A funny episode as Manny and his sidekick, a stone faced woman who plays the drums, drive all the customers away. When the dinner show bombs, Manny tries it at breakfast!
