Michael Burns and Norman Fell

"The Undergraduate" finds Shirley taking a college course in psychology, careful to use her maiden name of Renfrew to avoid being identified. Learning the ropes from classmate Paul Bruner (Michael Burns), Shirley's sweet and encouraging nature has the 19 year old quickly enamored, especially when they run out of gas following a lecture out of town. Shirley only becomes aware of his feelings when she receives a visit from his concerned parents (Norman Fell and Ann Morgan Guilbert), telling her how they saw "The Graduate"- twice! (quite a few references are made to the Dustin Hoffman-Anne Bancroft movie). And all this while an embarrassed Shirley is fetchingly dressed in hot pants, to the father's (and the male viewer's) obvious delight! The best way to gently discourage her young suitor is to invite him to dinner with the entire family, totally unaware that she's the mother of five children. Michael Burns was a former child actor from WAGON TRAIN, Ann Morgan Guilbert was best remembered for THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW, and Norman Fell's greatest fame soon came on THREE'S COMPANY. The featured song is "Brown Eyes," composed by Wes Farrell and Danny Janssen, from the LP SOUND MAGAZINE.
