An accident, suicide or murder?
mark.waltz19 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An unseen old woman has fallen out of her wheelchair onto the floor, and is discovered to be dead by her niece Hillary Brooke and her husband Cesar Romero. He goes to call the police to report an accident, and she tells him to change it to a suicide. They then discuss exactly what they're going to say, and it becomes apparent that there may have been foul play involved. That is especially obvious when they begin talking about the $300,000 her estate is worth. She goes from Joy to hysteria to tears, and you never understand at first what her real feelings about the situation are. She talks on and on, and this indeed, they are guilty of murder, she'll be the one to give it away. He is obviously agitated by her constant jabbering, and as they wait for the police, it becomes apparent that the tension between them is rising. Brooke, one of the most memorable femme fatale vixens in film noir, is playing the exact same archetype here, and Romero slyly makes his move to take care of her as the big problem. It seems at times that this is actually a rehearsal between two actors acting out a scene because it doesn't seem at all real, like some bad radio drama or early soap opera. It's not the fault of the actors. They are giving it their all and enjoying melodramatic. But as an anthology TV episode, it's truly an eye ruler.
