A chocolate lovers episode

This story plays out very well in this episode. And one really good thing is the subtle clues that are seen by the viewer but do not come together until Perry points them out at the end of the show. I like this in any mystery.

The story involves Claire Amstrong (Nancy Gates), also known as The Candy Queen, she is the owner of a candy company. She has her grandmother's recipe that is obvious so good that even Perry takes a few good nibbles.

The recipe has been stolen by Clarie's boyfriend, Mark Chester (John Napier) and used as collateral in an illegal gambling casino. Harry Arnold (John Archer) has the recipe but now sees much higher profits if he tries to blackmail Claire into buying the recipe back from him.

While Claire is waiting for a meeting with Perry. She receives a call from Mr Arnold about the recipe. When she goes over to his apartment she finds Mr Arnold dead from a gunshot wound. Sad thing is that the police is raiding the gambling casino and when they go to Mr Arnold's apartment they find Claire wiping off fingerprints from the gun. She is taken downtown to stand trial for the murder.

There are a few odd events that happen during the show. As when Claire's cousin eats poisoned chocolates. Paul goes talk to a women that owns a Ladies refinement school. Plus the odd way Claire's chocolates were package. (Her smiling mug was on the top cover of the box)- All these seem like little things but may well end up helping Perry find the real murderer.

This may not have been the best Perry mystery, but it did its job by making me interested in the outcome of the program. When you are interested then it is a good hour of your time.

Candy Clink

Warning: Spoilers
**SPOILERS** Besides the fact that Perry once again gets a parking spot right in front of the courthouse-how DOES he do it.. Why? There was only a little backstory in this episode. Claire is an idiot. Oh, sure, she's got a company worth millions, but she's dumb as a stump. She's willing to risk all her company's future for involvement with a gutless little parasite. Her grandmother had actually invented the formula for her calorieless candy years before. It tasted good, and sold well, but no one knew what it was that was so special until it was noticed that you could eat the delicious stuff without gaining weight! The old gal croaks, but not before her one grandchild (Wanda) leaves to get married. Still, the candy is just that; candy. It is only after some years that it becomes apparent what Claire (the grandchild that she leaves the formula to) really has: a formula worth millions. By now, Wanda is divorced and working for Claire in the candy factory, it's grown up into a really profitable business, and Claire finds someone to love. Unfortunately, he's a complete rat, yellowbelly and greedy little coward. He sells her out, trades the formula for money to use in a casino, and the story takes off.

Perry works it out. Now for the real formula: rich idiot, creepy associate, a gun, a dead extortionist (I always love it when a sack full of chicken poop starts begging for more time "Now, wait a minute!, wait! , wait!! BLAM! BLAM! BLAM! it's funny) , the idiot is caught (I thought it was funny, too), Perry to the rescue. I couldn't work up ANY sympathy for this client. Her cousin was partially right. The formula should ALMOST have been part hers. Problem was, Wanda left to get married BEFORE anyone knew what was so wonderful about the candy, and Grandma left it to Claire; she's the one who stuck it out. She's NOT the smart one; she's the lucky one. So, Wanda's out; but it doesn't excuse Claire's totally stupid, callous, selfish, behavior toward those who helped her.

One more thing I've mentioned before, is the "Happy Ending". In this case, Claire is going on a cruise. A CRUISE??? She needs to be sat down and have the facts of life explained to her by Della, before she is again taken in by a pretty snake. Of course, Perry's bread and butter is the client who cant tie their shoes without a map and a tour guide, isn't it??

A Sweet Episod

The Candy Queen had a recipe fall into her hands and made a candy empire out of it. She is young and the sharks come out and she get romantically involved. It would seem that sometimes fame is a recipe for disaster. She is accused of poisoning a man with her chocolate. I thought the case a bit weak but Perry still had to work it.

Here have some candy

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** Murder revolving around a secret candy formula that's more secretive then that of the H-Bomb has Perry Mason, Raymond Burr, get involve with the multi-million, that's billion in 2013 dollars, candy industry. We have the obligatory murder victim in Perry Mason regular John Archer as night club owner Harry Arnold. Arnold quickly establishes himself as a no good creep who deserves exactly what he ends up getting two bullets in the chest and abdomen killing him. Arnold had stolen the secret formula of the candy company "Candy Queen" and was going to use it to undercut the company's prices on the free or candy market.

It's "Candy Queen" president Claire Armstrong, Nancy Gates, who's found at Arnold's murder scene and arrested in his murder. At the same time someone sent Claire's step sister Wanda Buren, no relations to Eva, played by Patricia Smith a box of poison laced "Candy Queen" candy in an effort to murder her in order to keep Wanda from taking over the company if Claire ends up behind bars. Perry soon discovers that Claire's fiancée the good for nothing creep and compulsive gambler Mark Chester, John Napler, was in deep DoDo or debt to Arnold and may well have stolen his future wife's Claire candy formula to pay his debt off! Could Chester have been the one who murdered Arnold when he got too greedy and wanted more then he at first was offered!

***SPOILERS*** The ending did explain a number of confusing questions in just who murdered Arnold but the by far and the most important is that it copied off a previous Perry Mason episode "The case of the Silent Partner" that involved flowers not candy like here. But there was nothing silent here with Perry getting Arnold's killer to admit his or her guilt on the witness stand. Perry had the killer brake down and spill his guts out in record time or just in time to finally end the episode. And it was all in Perry's expert cross examination which was nothing but a piece of cake or better yet candy for him.
