China Crisis...
canndyman27 June 2020
Bodie and Doyle both go undercover in rather unglamorous roles, as CI5 target a Triad international heroin ring based in London.

Doyle teams up with Hong Kong detective Esther, while Bodie holes up in a seedy squat as they close in on the gang leader.

When the wife of a Chinese restaurant owner is kidnapped and released, her family are put under CI5 protection until the gang leader is captured. But will CI5 succeed in 'taking out' their Chinese target?

This episode is quite gritty, and unusual with both the boys working undercover separately. There are some suitably seedy-looking Soho locations, and a fun scene where Bodie visits Doyle's fruit market stall as a punter.

Doyle also has a run-in with a pair of supposedly tough-nut cops whom he later gets the chance to settle a score with.

This episode maybe lacks the usual witty banter and car chases, but does have a Sweeney-like grittiness - and the Chinese characters and plot add something a bit different to the usual espionage stories.

Effectively directed by Douglas Camfield, and look out for an appearance by 90s pop star Gary Shail as Bodie's ill-fated squat companion.

Take Away

Everybody is undercover. Doyle is a market trader. Bodie is a junkie in a dosshouse.

Cowley and the US Ambassador is concerned that the UK is a route for deadly heroin being shipped to the USA by Chinese Triad gangs in Hong Kong and in London. The East Germans are involved as well with the drugs going from Hong Kong to US serviceman in West Germany.

Elements of the plot is ahead of its time. Make a few changes and this could be basically be American Gangster or Tom Clancy's Without Remorse.

The plot here needed judicious editing. It is all over the place with superfluous characters. The angry young man looking for his American girlfriend. Two racist detectives harassing Doyle.

Still Doyle gets to do kung fu again and it is entertaining if confusing.

The Chinese are back

Warning: Spoilers
TAKE AWAY is the second episode to deal with the Chinese, this time around focusing in a Triad gang who need infiltrating to be taken down. The usual everyday racism and stereotypes abound, along with the unlikely spectacle of Doyle trying to do a bit of kung fu, which doesn't work at all well. The undercover plot gives it a fresher angle than usual and the pacing's decent.
