Solo meets Solo in The Wrath Of Kahan
profh-118 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The Protectors (this is only the 2nd time I've seen them referred by this name) have been hired to protect a visiting Middle Eastern President. However, Harry's up-to-now unseen wife and young son have been kidnapped, and in exchange for their release, Harry has agreed to assassinate his client.

Meanwhile, Caroline kidnaps the President, while Paul is at the airport meeting one of their foreign agents. He resembles The President, and takes his place while the real one is under Paul's protection. The next day, as The President steps out of his hotel in front of a crowd of people, Harry shoots him dead, and seconds later, is shot in the back dead by Caroline!

All ends well, but sadly...

Of all the episodes, THIS is the only one I can actually remember seeing back in the 70s, when NBC ran it on Sunday nights as filler after the NBC Mystery Movies. And wouldn't you know-the writer was Sylvia Anderson. Does it seem this is telling us something? At least it's nowhere as depressing as the 2 Mary Straker episodes of "UFO".

The President was a familiar face-Martin Benson. I've seen him in "EXODUS", "A MATTER OF WHO", "CLEOPATRA", "A SHOT IN THE DARK", 3 episodes of THE SAINT, the 1977 JESUS OF NAZARETH, a RETURN OF THE SAINT, THE SEA WOLVES, CAMPION ("Look To The Lady"), and, perhaps most famously, the American gangster in "GOLDFINGER" named "Mr. Solo". For someone born in London, he played a lot of foreign villains.

The real shock of this episode, was "Kahan", who under a thick accent was played by Jeremy Brett! This wound up being today's wild coincidence, as earlier this afternoon, I was watching a 1965 SHERLOCK HOLMES episode where the main villain was played by David Burke! (Seriously, what are the odds?)

This marriage with son broken up because of a job plot predated STAR TREK 2 by nearly a decade, but of course, for Gerry Anderson it was already a retread.

... With a Little Help from My Friends

Harry Rule has returned from his break. Only to be met by a face from his past. She is Laura (Hannah Gordon) and she needs his help and the baddies have her son held captive.

Harry leaves a hidden message behind for Contessa Caroline di Contini and Paul Buchet.

The son is held by Kahan (Jeremy Brett) an opposition leader in an unnamed middle eastern country. Harry's job is to kill the President who is on a visit to London.

It is for Caroline and Paul to track down the President and ensure his safety. They do this by flying in a double over from Turkey.

An episode that shows a bit of Harry's background. Laura is his wife so he needs to keep his son safe. That might explain why his relationship with Caroline is rather chaste.

Brett is sinister and ruthless as Kahan but has to be browned up for the role. International actor Roshan Seth who has a small role, he could easily had filled in as Kahan.

This is the cheesy, unreal world of 30 minute drama. No time to develop the plot or characters etc., but wait this one delivers! Very well written and paced. Really good direction and the script seems oddly out of sync with some of the other ones found in this ITC series.

It helps that it is shot about London. A balance of the outside and in. This has a very fine cast. They ARE actors. The delightful Hannah Gordon, and Nyree Dawn Porter. The incredible Jeremy Brett is a delightful bonus and didn't I hear Victor Maddern during the intro to add gravitas? (Doesn't get a credit - am I wrong?)

Even the wooden (but equally delightful) Robert Vaughn appears interested. Maybe it was having the dog and family interest that sparked him to switch on his own actor's button? (He is the real star, ITC must have paid him well?)

This is possibly the finest example of this series. Still very hard to deliver action and dialogue, creativity and pathos within the time frame. But this one appears to deliver hence my score. Sylvia Anderson clearly more than just the wife of Jerry, Thunderbirds and Lady Penelope! .

Unusually the big props (the exotic cars) are MIA in this one. (But teh Rover and RR delight).
