Great Quincy episode.

Warning: Spoilers
Quincy M.E.: Dead and Alive starts as a White Messenger courier van catches fire & crashes into a petrol station causing a huge explosion. Los Angeles finest Lt. Monahan (Garry Walberg) & medical examiner Quincy (Jack Klugman) are called to the scene, a badly burned body is found inside the van which is initially thought to be that of courier Peter Neilson (Bruce Wright). No positive identification can be made although all the evidence points towards Peter. Meanwhile Peter's sister Carol (Ayn Ruymen) tells Quincy that has spoken to her brother on the phone so it cannot be him which puzzles Quincy, since no positive identification can be made on the badly burnt body Quincy is inclined to believe her & sets out to find the truth one way or the other...

Episode 7 from season 4 this Quincy story was directed by James Benson & is very enjoyable as well as proving that Quincy as a series could handle a wide variety of interesting & different stories. Here despite almost overwhelming evidence to the contrary Quincy sets out to prove that Peter Neilson is still alive & badly injured somewhere, it's neat little story story actually & I don't think I've seen anything similar in any other series. It's not all about dead bodies, Quincy is often about finding the truth although it generally starts with a dead body. Dead and Alive is a great episode, there's crime, there's drama, there's some humour, there's Quincy having to fight against bureaucracy & there's a good solid story although one has to say maybe it's a little bit predictable. It's still fun though & well worth fifty minutes of anyones time.

The start of Dead and Alive sees some pretty cool stunt work as a van explodes, crashes into a petrol station & the whole thing blows up in spectacular style. The acting is pretty good as usual although predictably the regulars are just better with the format & what is required. I think I'm right in saying that the Richard O'Brien in this episode is not that same one who appeared in the cult The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) or hosted The Crystal Maze (1990 - 1993) TV game show.

Dead and Alive is a quality crime driven Quincy episode with an original & entertaining story that I enjoyed a lot. A must for fans & TV detective show lovers everywhere.

Interesting and enjoyable mystery episode
rayoflite2413 September 2015
Dead and Alive begins with two shady men giving a package to a courier, Peter Neilson (Bruce Wright), who insists that this will be his last delivery for them. As Peter drives down the road, his truck suddenly explodes and veers off crashing into a gas station causing a huge explosion. Quincy (Jack Klugman) later conducts the autopsy of the body found in the wreckage which is assumed to be Peter, but it is so badly charred that he cannot make a positive identification. After further examination of teeth fragments seems to confirm that it was Peter, his sister (Ayn Ruymen) disputes the findings telling everybody that she received a phone call from Peter proving that he is still alive. This puts her at odds with her mother (Priscilla Pointer) who wants Peter declared dead so the case will be closed and she can collect on the insurance policy.

I found this to be an interesting and enjoyable mystery episode with a good balance of action thrown in, especially the accident scenes in the beginning which I thought were well done. Although it was pretty apparent who was responsible for the accident and death, who was actually killed and what happened after was not, so this kept my attention throughout. There is also some humorous scenes thrown in as Quincy, Sam (Robert Ito) and Danny (Val Bisoglio) go on a hillside search which Danny was not prepared or dressed for.

All in all, a good Season 4 mystery episode entry which I highly recommend.

Dead and Alive
Prismark103 October 2018
Dead and Alive is an example of a very good Quincy episode. It was always a better show before it became an issue of the week series in its later years when it was hijacked by various pressure groups.

The episode starts off with a well staged stunt as a courier van explodes and then crashes into a petrol station causing an even bigger explosion.

The driver was Peter Neilson. We know he has been doing something shady with his employers and he wants out. His boss planned to permanently shut him up.

Quincy finds the badly charred body of Peter and waits for dental records to identify him. Peter's sister later tells Quincy that her brother has phoned him in a distressed state. Peter's mother wants him pronounced dead so she can get hold of an insurance payout.

If this is true then Quincy wonders who is the body they found and where is Peter? The bad guys also need to make sure that Peter remains dead.

What set Quincy apart is you get little medical nuggets as the show goes on. The science as to what happens to a body when there is an explosion. The psychological profile regarding Peter in case he was still alive after the explosion. I loved all this stuff when watching Quincy when I was a kid.

As always Quincy doggedly pursues the truth and find an injured Peter in time. There is always time for some humour as Danny is drafted in for a walk in the country with Sam and Quincy.

Decent "Quincy" episode.
planktonrules19 April 2013
"Dead and Alive" begins with some courier taking a package from two drug dealers. However, soon after, the courier's van explodes and then careens into a gas station--and a HUGE explosion results. It clearly appears as if the courier is dead. And, after a forensic expert on dental work examines what's left of the body, Quincy announces that the courier is dead. However, a short time later, the dead man's sister begins receiving odd phone calls that appear to be from the dead guy! But, his mother is anxious to close up the case and get the insurance money, and she pushes to have the case closed. Naturally, Quincy decides to play cop and investigate where the guy might be. But, it's important that they find the guy fast if he does exist, because he was hurt by the blast and sounded as if he's dying. Overall, a decent episode. While the plot is far from exciting, it is a major plus that Quincy is less angry than usual and he isn't on his soap box, so to speak. Worth seeing.
