The third season of 'Shelley' ended with the birth of his and Fran's daughter, whom they christen 'Emma' ( named after Hywel Bennett's real-life daughter ). Fran insists on her husband being present at the birth. That is all the episode has by the way of plot. No sign of Shelley dashing about in an attempt to get Fran to hospital as the labour pains start, as one might find in a different sitcom. Top marks to Peter Tilbury then for skilfully avoiding the traditional clichés. Any hopes Fran might have had that the child will instill on her good-for-nothing husband a sense of responsibility are cruelly dashed as we will soon see. This might have been a good place to stop the series, instead it continued for another seven seasons, finally ending in 1992.
Funniest moment - an irate Shelley holds up a white cap given to him by a nurse. "Why do I have to wear this? Do they expect the baby to die of dandruff poisoning?".
