Doctor in drag!

Warning: Spoilers
A none-too brilliant episode.

Frank ( if you can believe it ) is now a demolitions man. Admiring a old chimney, he can barely bring himself to do his job. His mate sets the explosives off instead and he is nearly crushed as it topples to the ground.

Betty receives a letter from Frank's grandfather ( Dick Bentley ) who is coming over from Australia. She and Frank get the spare room ready. To make the old boy feel at home, he pins to the wall a map of Australia ( upside down ) and leaves Frank Ifield records laying about.

Jessica falls ill, and Dr.Mender ( Derek Farr ) is sent for. Mender turns up at the Spencer house, but before leaving changes into his costume for the hospital pantomime. Frank thinks the man is a transvestite...

No elaborate stunts in this one, just Frank looking horrified at the sight of a grown man in women's clothing. For some unknown reason, the doctor fails to tell him exactly why he is dressed that way. Then his friend ( also in drag ) shows up and the situation gets worse.

Derek Farr was a leading man in British film and theatre in the Forties and Fifties. Also in 1978 he played cantankerous scientist 'Ensor' in the sci-fi drama 'Blake's 7'. Dick Bentley was in the classic '50's radio comedy 'Take It From Here', as well as the 'Barry McKenzie' movies.

Funniest moment - Frank shouting at Mr.Lewis ( Glynn Edwards ) through a closed front door. He tries to act the hard man, but then Lewis returns unexpectedly and Frank almost defecates in his pants.

Doctor in distress.

Frank receives a letter from his grandfather, stating that he wants Frank and Betty to work on his farm, Betty isn't convinced. Frank pays a visit to see Doctor Mender, and gets the wrong end of the stick.

It's another very funny episode, it's almost toned down when compared to some of the others in the series. It has a wonderful opening sequence, that must be one of the show's most memorable scenes.

It highlights Frank's innocence and naivety once again, it's so funny.

The lines about the cat once again are hilarious, four days on the roof, too funny. Great to see Frank has picked up his chimney sweeping business once again,

Derek Farr is excellent as the irritated Doctor, I'm so used to seeing him in straight roles, some very serious parts, he shows a real talent for comedy here. It must have been a real coup appearing on this show, he's brilliant.

8/10.
