Addiction
claudio_carvalho22 June 2015
Jack, Sam, Daniel and Teal'c are watching Naquadah being sent through the Stargate on a planet and they decide to bring samples to Earth. They see a woman crossing the forest and when she is ready to commit suicide jumping off on a cliff, Daniel saves her. They are arrested and her father, Pyrus, who is the responsible for the planet, sentences the SG-1 to labor work in the Naquadah mines. They try to escape but Daniel is wounded and they have to return to work as slaves. Daniel awakes Sarcophagus and Princess Shyla has a crush on him and forces Daniel to go inside the Sarcophagus several times. When Daniel meets the SG-1, they feel that he has changed. When Daniel agrees to marry Shyla, the SG-1 is allowed to return to Earth and Dr. Janet Fraiser discovers that the repetitive use of the Sarcophagus creates an altered state of mind and addiction. Can Daniel be saved from his addiction?

"Need" is a reasonable episode of "Stargate SG-1" where the SG-1 learns that the Sarcophagus has limitation in its use. There is a kind of joke with the trees and forests when Shyla tells how beautiful the trees are to Jackson since many episodes are inside forests. My vote is seven.

Title (Brazil): "Need"

An Interesting Question...

Not really a review but an observation- this is the third time Jackson has been healed by the sarcophagus. Why isn't his eyesight healed?

An interesting perspective of addiction
cheesustoast28 September 2014
This is somewhat disjointed and slow moving but it does pick up in the last half. I am somewhat puzzled that someone says that Jackson "falls in love..." That is something that certainly does NOT happen at any point in this episode! This episode is mostly centered around the idea of addiction - hence the title.

I found that part of the story seems to be built up in the first half but it just fizzles out. After about the first half of the episode it gets more interesting but the original story never really takes form. It does, however, show the nature of the bond between the members of the team.

The acting was intriguing (especially Michael Shanks) and the storyline becomes an important part of the SG1 series. It is not quite up to the standard of other episodes. It is a good episode for revealing more about the nature of the goa'uld.

Jackson falls in love

Warning: Spoilers
Were I had my doubts in season one about the hype of Stargate back then in the nineties this episode shows how a series can finally find its way story wise and moves further in a direction with an actual storyline and not like in season one were each episode stood on its own. The planets do always looked the same but here there's more to discover. From now on you have to watch closely to what happened before with SG-1 to understand it all. It's all about Jackson this time while walking in a forest with SG-1 they see how a girl is ready to fall into an abyss, suicide but Jackson saves her. Not knowing she's a princess and not knowing why she's trying to kill herself he's actually chosen by the princess to become her husband. But SG-1 is captured because the ruler of the planet thinks they wanted to kill the princess. Jackson is drugged by the Sarcophagus and the rest of SG-1 is sentenced to work in the mines until they die. Only Jackson can save his team from death... The Sarcophagus plays an important role here and we did have seen it earlier in some episodes. It is explained what it does but you have to pick it up into your memory for further episodes. A rather good episode that was over before you know it and the jokes coming from Colonel Jack do work out fine too. Gore 0/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0,5/5

Damn Daniel

This episode serves as a grave warning to those thinking of abusing the healing powers of a sarcophagus. A boring storyline with weak supporting characters. Acting and effects worked well.
