Never accept trinkets from a stranger
owlaurence8 September 2010
Warning: Spoilers
A lot of good moments in this episode. We meet Anise, who rather sums up O'Neill's whole problem with the Tok'ra: you never quite know what they're up to. (It doesn't help that Anise, the only Tok'ra who wears spandex instead of rags, *looks* like trouble waiting to happen).

Anyway, at Anise's instigation, the human members of SG1 start an interesting little experiment that offers lots of funny and unusual moments, much to SGC's dismay. Honestly, it's too much fun to have us really worried about the consequences of wearing those armbands (Btw: "With great power comes great responsibility"... WHO stole Peter Parker's stuff?!!) Who, after all, could begrudge O'Neill a chance to get back at Teal'c for all those years of losing to him, or Carter for wanting to shine a little, or Daniel -the former timid geek- for standing up to small-town bullies? The last part of the story, with the (possibly set-up) raid against a mothership, is a bit less fun, but the fact that it will be mentioned again later makes it significant. Things return to normal rather quickly after that, which is a bit of a pity, but the ending still provides some interesting dialogues (and I like it that despite being rather abruptly left out, Teal'c still manages to hold his own).

The Alien Device
claudio_carvalho17 May 2016
The SGC receives the Tok'ra Anise that brings three alien devices that they have found to be used around the fist and she explains that the device increases the strength and the speed of the user. However, the artifact does not work with her race and she would like to experiment it in Earthlings. Jack, Sam and Daniel accepts to wear the device and soon they realize that they have increased abilities. Then Anise explains that the Goa'uld are building a powerful spacecraft capable to subdue other races in the universe and Jack, Sam and Daniel plot a scheme to destroy the spaceship using their new acquired abilities. Meanwhile Dr. Fraiser finds that the device releases a virus to increase the abilities of the user and the body of the human race is not prepared for that. Further, the artifact cannot be removed from their arms. But Jack, Sam and Daniel decide to go anyway to the planet as per their plan. However, when they arrive at the Goa'uld facilities, they learn that they have just lost their abilities and the place will blow-up in a few minutes. What will happen to them?

"Upgrades" is one of the best episodes of "Stargate SG-1". The show is full of action and Jack using the the alien device is funny. The sequence at the fast-food is one of the funniest in this series, with the nerd Daniel acting like a tough guy. My vote is nine.

A unique storyline with some cool effects and interesting technology. The acting was good and the cast had great chemistry. Well developed resolution.

Superheroes

Warning: Spoilers
The development closely resembles the scenes where a generic superhero is discovering his own powers (it made me think of Spiderman). Jack even acknowledges this in the bar brawl by stating it's a cliché. The serene demeanor of Gal. Hammond (Don Davis was very well cast) is in stark contrast with the junkie behavior of the three usual suspects. The beautiful Tokra woman is as cynic and patronizing as they come. Nice to see the Vulcan nerve pinch being used outside the Star Trek universe.

This woman was trouble to the nth degree

She was used perfectly in this episode. Unfortunately, they missed an opportunity to take advantage of this particular Tok'ra, I believe she appears in only one other episode and the tone is not quite as good as it was, here.

Somebody compares this to the Farscape episode "Throne for a Loss"- yes, exactly. I am not sure which came first: this, or the Farscape episode.

But the opportunities for comedy abound, and are utilized to their full potential.

Unfortunate things happen when SG-1 is knee deep in Goa'uld dren, and of course, once again we can rely on Teal'c to extract them from it. But he was following orders.

There are some very humorous special effects, reminiscent of The Flash and John Wesley Shipp... and this is probably the only time Teal'c loses a boxing match to Jack.

Similar to Farscape SE01E04

Fun fact, the wrist device is just like the wrist device in Farscape Season 1 eps 4. Not to mention that Claudia Black and Ben Browdet join Sg1 in the later seasons.
