Better Than You Might Think.

Some pretty poor reviews here but this is one of my favourites. Great cast, it rips along with plenty of action.

It's only the sixth episode but things are already well established and continued this way until a few weak episodes in the last series.

Released in early 1975 I was only 13 when it was first shown and the time is caught so well, particularly the big old pub full of people smoking and drinking.

John Thaw gets a bit more time talking, particularly with the main woman but it never gets boring. If only there were more programs that could be this good now. No worrying about offending anybody or including every type of background, just coppers and wronguns, sometimes with a bit of overlap.

Larceny Inc On The Stage Set
TheFearmakers25 June 2021
When you take the stage actors away from the stage, they'll simply bring the stage onto television, as is this episode mostly taking place in the sleazy apartment of Jack's ex girlfriend, a lush living above a noisy pub providing background noise straight from a neon neo noir, and like Larceny Inc there are surrounding bank robbers using her room as an in-between to break into the bank next-door... Meanwhile the dialog is pulpy and good, and these two have the right amount of anti-chemistry chemistry; although there's not a tightened sense of anticipation, i.e. Tension, which would have made it a great episode as opposed to a pretty good one.

Unusual, with a parallel

Warning: Spoilers
An unusual episode as others have noted. However there is an interesting parallel here that I have not found referenced anywhere. Thieves break into a closed bank over a weekend by digging through the wall of an adjoining basement. They are advised via radio by another gang member on a nearby roof whose radio transmissions are eventually picked up by police. The gang take jewelry from safe deposit boxes but what they are really interested in is a mysterious large flat package. We never learn the contents but at the end PT reveals the package has "political implications".

Anyone seen "The Bank Job" with Jason Stathem?

Poor showing

Warning: Spoilers
A surprisingly poor showing for the programme, with John Thaw seemingly frustrated by the lack of material. This one sees a stake-out to begin with, but then Regan hooks up with an old flame and spends the rest of the episode either in bed or fighting with her. That doesn't make for much in the way of entertainment.

A rather odd episode with a scared Regan.
lmillington12 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I found this episode very odd indeed. Regan behaves in a way that I have never seen before. Carter is almost absent and get very badly beaten up by three other coppers who did not know him. Reagan tells his call girl "friend" the full details of the police operation despite the fact that she has access to a phone and could have spilled the beans. Regan acts scared (very unlike him) in several scenes. We're used to Regan rounding on Haskins but this was a different kind of disrespect shown to his superior here. Altogether a very strange script with a vulnerable Regan looking somewhat fragile.

Night Out
Prismark104 January 2020
The brother of the creator of The Sweeney, Troy Kennedy-Martin writes this one.

It starts out as unusual but then loses its way. Regan is called into action as a bank robbery is taking place. The robbers have used a cellar of a pub to get through. They seem to be interested in the safe deposit boxes.

Staying in the pub is an old flame of Regan. He needs to find out all she knows. The supervising officer is gung ho who likes media glory. To protect his back, Regan calls Carter and make sure he is in the pub with a cop who has a good shot.

A lot of it is Regan sparring with his ex girlfriend. It includes a scene where she puts his gun in a dishwasher. There is a big pub fight as an elderly customer finds out that the police are in. Inexplicably Regan sends the cop with a gun home and then he finds himself in big danger.

This could had been a classic episode with a cast that includes Derrick O'Connor, Peter Childs and Nick Brimble. However there was some bad writing here.

Tony Sympson who plays who the elderly customer was a familiar face on television and commercials.
