Wiry Frank Fenton script, crackling with hardboiled attitude, gets plenty of mileage out of routine buried loot plot. Bradford Dillman, who often played weaklings, doesn't yield an inch in his heroic role here, even out-staring Drury in one scene. John Dehner makes a five-course meal out of his sardonic bad guy role and devours each morsel. Dehner would be only marginally less antisocial when he assumed the part of Morgan Starr, new boss of Shiloh, after Lee J. Cobb flew the coop midway in season four. The horsemanship of Edward Asner, playing a dude detective hot on the trail of the crooks, is quite a sight. Think of a potted plant precariously perched on a pitching precipice.

the gold was stolen from a mail train
fpasserini23 June 2021
Early in the episode George Johnson tells the Virginian that he works for the government and the gold was stolen from a mail train. Putting two together, it appears Johnson was a U. S. Postal Inspector, not a detective or a railroad dick.
In any case, actor Ed Asner does not present a very good image of a federal agent.

Recover the loot

Bradford Dillman plays an old friend of Trampas, John Dehner an outlaw and'
fast draw who was in on a robbery with Dillman and Ed Asner as the railroad
detective looking to recover a fortune in gold that the other two stole five years ago.
Doug McClure had a chance to be in on the robbery, but passed.
Some crackling performances from the guest stars take over this episode. By the way I completely guessed wrong how it would end.
I think you might also.
