Scarface on the Wagon Train
bkoganbing17 February 2018
A little bit of the classic film Scarface goes into this Wagon Train story which recalls a time Cooper Smith was in Brooklyn and got rolled by a couple of plug uglys on the docks there. That and a bit of Blood And Sand toward the end.

Ross Martin and his mother and sister have joined the Wagon Train and are traveling west. Robert Fuller and the sister Annette Funicello are start to keep company, but he recognizes Martin when he meets him as the leader of a gang that rolled him and worked him over. The two henchmen, Richard Bakalyn and Stanley Adams are also on the Train and working the old protection racket with the settlers.

As Paul Muni was jealous of anyone coming near his sister Ann Dvorak in Scarface so Martin is when it comes to Funicello. When the two hooligans are discovered working the protection racket it becomes a necessity to get rid of Fuller.

Martin who was a most chameleon like performer who spoke many languages and could adapt to any role gets his Brookynese down pat for this part. As both Adams and Bakalyn are convincing urbanites their scenes have verisimilitude.

Jocelyn Brando plays the mother and the final scene has her in a church praying just as Nazimova was in Blood And Sand after Tyrone Power's last bullfight. The influence of that film is obvious.

Annette Funicello is something different than a Walt Disney perky teen and a Beach Party girl. Her fans might want to see this.
