THE WHISTLER : Cancelled Flight 1955
This is episode 15 from the 39 episode run of, THE WHISTLER television series. The series ran during 1954 and 1955. It is based on the popular radio and film series of the same name. Each episode begins with the sound of footsteps and a person whistling. The episodes followed the same formula, in that someone's criminal acts were undone, either by an overlooked detail, or by their own stupidity. During the episodes, the Whistler himself narrated, often commenting directly upon the action.
This one starts at a small airport outside of L.A. Pilots, Walter Sande and Richard Arlen are being questioned by a local Police Detective. They are looking for a small aircraft that was seen in Mexico picking up a bit of narcotics. And the aircraft looked a lot like Sande and Arlen's small plane.
The Police go over the aircraft but find nothing illegal on board. The Police now head off to continue their search at one of the other air services. Sande and Arlen now huddle and say they need to lay low for a while. It seems that the pair, are supplementing their income with the odd trip south of the border to pick up narcotics.
They had been lucky this trip and had dropped the cargo at a spot out in the desert. Mobster type, Lewis Charles, is not pleased with the pair wanting to stop the weekly deliveries. Neither does pilot Arlen. He likes the steady stream of cash. He decides he will bump off partner Sande and continue the sideline on his own.
Arlen knows that every night that Sande takes the same darkened alley home after a few brews at the bar. Arlen waits in the shadows with a pistol. He hears someone strolling up the alley and steps out and puts several rounds into the man. He then beats the feet home.
The next day he hits the airfield like nothing happened. The Police are there questioning the airport staff about the killing. Arlen smiles to himself has he hears the news. The smile vanishes when he hears a name other than Sande's mentioned as the dead man. Had Arlen shot the wrong man in error in the dark?
Several red herrings are now thrown out that cause Arlen to believe that Sande had made a separate deal with Mobster, Charles. Charles then turns up dead after a gun battle with John Law. Charles had been out to the site in the desert to collect the dropped off narcotics. Arlen had not told him where they were hidden. He had to have gotten the info from Sande.
Arlen thinks he is now about to get scooped by the boys in blue, and decides a trip to Mexico is in order. He grabs a plane and takes off just as the Police pull up. Arlen, in a rush to escape, has rushed the pre-flight checks and he crashes and burns at the end of the runway.
The Police were really here to tell Arlen that the dead man in the alley was really Sande. Sande had been carrying false papers and a passport. He also had a cool 50 large on his person. The Police were here to give the cash to his partner, Arlen.
This one is a pretty good episode with several nice twists and turns.
