A faithless wife
bkoganbing18 January 2017
A really good cast populates this episode of the Zane Grey Theater as Tom Tryon comes home on leave from the army where he finds his wife Mala Powers shot dead and sheriff Richard Anderson investigating. There's been talk about Powers, she's the topic of a lot of hot gossip concerning her relations with both Chester Morris and Skip Homeier.

Tryon does his own investigation and hears from Mary Astor who is Morris's wife and Tom Tully who Homeier's father about them. After that he goes home to mother Beulah Bondi and she reveals a most surprising story about how two bullets got into Powers.

This is a good story with a good cast that suffers a bit because of the half hour format of the Zane Grey Theater. A little more development might have been needed. Still this fine cast really delivers.

Black Is for Grief

Warning: Spoilers
Jeff Anderson returns from the war hoping to be reunited with his beautiful young wife.

Only to be told that she has been shot dead.

The Sheriff has the difficult job to tell Jeff that while he was away. His wife did not like being on her own.

She got used to male company and anyone of her admirers could had been the killer.

The twist comes when Jeff goes to see his mother. Jeff is an unreliable narrator as he visited his mother the night before.

An entertaining story but you would have thought the mother would had more of an iron grip on the daughter in law while Jeff was away.

Nobody is innocent in this entertaining tale.

In this star-studded episode, we have Jeff Anderson going home on leave from the Union Army and making his way back to his home town and to his wife. Upon arriving at home, Jeff finds Sheriff Bates exiting his house. They have found his wife, Barbara, dead from a gunshot wound. Jeff wants to know why someone would kill such a beautiful and faithful woman. It is left to the Sheriff to tell Jeff that Barbara may have been playing the field while Jeff was gone. And even tells him the names of Frank Simmons and Cleve Roarke that may have had a fling with Barbara.

Jeff is bound to find out who killed his wife. He goes to investigate which person may have wanted Barbara dead. Along the way Jeff hears things that will turn his stomach. What he finds out was that Barbara was lonely and not a faithful wife- something that he can not take.

This was actually a very interesting tale. It is one of those 'you-must-see' to find out how the ending is revealed - and a worthy finale indeed. The ending makes the viewer feel inside for the entire situation where no one was innocent. A very entertaining story.

You also have some nice actors making an appearance. Mary Astor, Mala Powers, Tom Tully and Richard Anderson make their character come to life which makes the viewer feel part of the show. An episode that needs to be watched to enjoy.
