One moment of brilliant comic timing in a pretty uneven half-hour
snoozejonc22 December 2020
Lister feels a strange longing for his absent crew mate Rimmer.

This is a hit and miss episode with some memorable moments, but quite a bit of it misses the mark for me.

The plot is relatively character driven and focuses on Kochanski's struggle to fit in, Kryten's continued resentment towards her and Lister's apparent realisation that he misses spending time with Rimmer. These are pretty good concepts with potential to set up comic situations well, but unfortunately the comedy does not deliver to the standard set in past series.

Of the more memorable sequences the final musical number is one of the better ones, particularly Lister's reaction to it, but it's still light years behind the best moments of the first six series. My personal favourite moment and for me the only truly laugh-out-loud moment in series 7 so far is Kryten's attempt to play a hypnotherapy disc to help Lister relax but he mixes it up with something that has the opposite effect. The timing here is perfect as is Robert Llewelyn's delivery and Craig Charles' response.

All performances are as strong as possible. Charles, Llewelyn, Danny-John Jules, Chloe Annette and Chris Barrie do their best with the material given but it's hard not to notice how much the jokes are lacking in comparison to what we have experienced in the show's heyday.
