Brendan Dillon and Powys Thomas

"The Long Rifles" opens with the Ojibwes using long rifles to kill white settlers. Hawkeye and Chingachgook arrive in Watertown to visit gunsmith Eben Cotten (Brendan Dillon, last of two), whose rifles carry a distinguishing mark of his own design, and keeps a journal of every gun sold. His daughter is being courted by trader Neil (Larry Solway, last of two), giving up his own cache of rifles to avoid competition with his future father-in-law. A failed ambush conducted by Ponca (Juan Root, seventh of eight) leads Hawkeye to suspect someone other than Cotten to be guilty of selling out to Ojibwe Chief Towak (Powys Thomas, last of six), especially when Eben, his daughter, and their entire stock goes missing. It's no stretch to guess who the culprit is, but there are some surprises in store before the end.

The Long Rifles

Eben Cotten is a gunsmith who is suspected of selling rifles to an Indian tribe.

The local townsfolk are up in arms and are ready to attack Eben for trading with the enemy.

Hawkeye and Chingachgook arrives in time to save Eben from a lynching. Only Eben's prospective son in law is willing to stand up for him.

Eben tells Hawkeye that all his guns have a special stamp on them. However Hawkeye later finds an Indian with a rifle with Eben's stamp on it.

It does not take much to figure out who is selling the rifles to the Indian tribe. The reason does come up as a surprise.

Another adventure where Hawkeye needs saving just in the nick of time.

It was a bit silly of Eben to confront the locals. They were not drunk but out for blood.
