Lana tampers with the world beyond
Rcwilkinson12321 April 2008
Another slow episode that yet contains a storyline that has some interesting points arrives in Smallville's 105th episode.

Lana is depressed, and feels abandoned by everybody who used to be close to her. Desperate to see her parents, she fritters away her money while in college to take a drug that allows her to get near to the other side past death, and almost see her parents. The closer she gets to death and almost sees them, the more addicted she gets to the drug. In his attempt to save her, Clark gets injected the drug, and his deceased father Jonathan speaks to him. Beforehand, Clark goes to central America to investigate the whereabouts of nemesis Milton Fine.

The viewers can truly see what a low point Lana has hit in her life, to the point that she has gone from a top student full of happiness to a young woman vying for some semblance of love, no matter what the cost. It is intriguing to see Clark get inspired by his father one final time.

Smallville Goes "Flatliners!"
spasek3 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I kept waiting for Kiefer Sutherland to show up, or Kevin Bacon to make this episode more ridiculous than it already was. As a writer, if you're going to rip off someone else's work, at least try to make it credible.

Once again, Lana is reeling from another failed relationship, and she has been "dying" in order to see her parents on the other side. As I said, this is a plot taken straight from the movie, "Flatliners," in which five medical students attempt to find out the answers to the afterlife by killing themselves and coming back.

The character of Lana continues to deteriorate. She believes herself to be a mature, sophisticated girl who thinks she has the answers to life. She doesn't. She's the opposite. She's a very sad and immature girl who is always looking for happiness outside of herself, in places where it can never be found. Clark was wise not to disclose his secret to such a person who cannot be trusted or relied upon. This was proven in "Reckoning" when she all but discloses Clark's secret to Lex. A person who is incapable of being alone is a very sad person indeed.

Meanwhile, Clark is trying to find Milton Fine, and later finds out that Lionel Luthor knows about Clark's powers. At this point, the viewer is left wondering what Lionel's intentions are, especially as he's been hovering around Martha. John Glover is such a wonderful actor. I never get tired of watching his scenes.

The high point of this rather weak episode is Clark's brief interaction with Jonathan. It was a nice moment. Otherwise, watch Lana miraculously bounce back without any consequences.

Beyond Death
claudio_carvalho8 July 2007
The lonely Lana gets addicted in a meteor rock cocktail developed by her new acquaintance student of medicine Lance, which allows the user to have a near-death experience and visit the dead loved relatives and friends. Meanwhile, Clark goes to Honduras, where there is a massive destruction, trying to find Milton Fine and the spacecraft, following a lead of Chloe. When Lana gets in trouble, Clark returns but is injected with the serum. In his trip, he meets Jonathan, who tells him that Lionel Luthor knows his secret, while Martha gets close to Lionel.

"Void" is another great episode of the Fifth Season of "Smallville". The experiences of Clark, Lex and Lana with their parents discloses revelations to each character: Clark is informed about Lionel; Lex talks to his mother, who advises him about his fate; and Lana is feeling an emptiness in her life after breaking-up with Clark. My vote is nine.
