Joey and the Dad (#2.15)

Warning: Spoilers
Joey's movie premier is coming and he is excited. First of all he gets a huge billboard, only unfortunately it is overshadowed by Carmen Electra's billboard. And his dad comes to the premier, only he doesn't seem to respect the job Joey has. When Joey finds it out he confronts his dad and turns out he was just upset that Joey will not follow his line of work and felt like Joey doesn't respect it.

The story about Joey and his dad was good. It was pretty sweet and they managed to make it so that we feel for thee dad as well. Also it was great that they got Robert Cotanzo, who also played Joey's dad on Friends.

The first of the 'lost' Joey episodes

Having been criticised for its lack of continuity to 'Friends', it was nice to see Robert Costanzo reprise his role as Joey senior that he first played back in Season 1 of 'Friends'.

And it is this relationship between the two generations of Joey's that is at the centre of the episode. There is a nice scene between them at the end that makes you realise the potential that was there in widening the show up to develop stories around Joey's wider family. Alas it was not to be.

It's very much a two hander at times between LeBlanc and Costanzo, and because of this the other characters are given more of a backseat role. This highlights the problem raised by fans that because we were never properly introduced to them at the start the other characters are now not strong enough to carry plots on their own. There's a tiny B plot regarding Bobbie's dress, but that's it. Even Carmen Electra's return is rushed.

Overall, a decent enough episode, but one that had a great premise that didn't pay off.
