Selma's Choice is another exceptional episode from an exceptional season, season 4. It focuses on Selma, one half of the duo of Patty and Selma, Marge's sisters who don't get along with Homer. The twin sisters are rarely sympathetic, but of the two, Selma's usually the warmer, more human one- the one most interested in finding love, as previously seen in Principal Charming and Black Widower, the one who told Marge where Homer was in I Married Marge. And this is an episode that tries to make her sympathetic- even Homer feels sympathetic for her at the end.
When Patty, Selma, and Marge's aunt dies, the aunt leaves advice in her will for Patty and Selma to start a family. Selma takes the advice to heart and searches for someone who can give her a baby. She has little success, so she considers artificial insemination. In the mean time, the Simpsons plan to go to an amusement park called Duff Gardens (the park is aimed at whole families but is ironically based on a beer company), but Homer gets sick. Selma takes the kids instead, but has trouble taking care of them. Now unsure she can raise kids, she settles on adopting an iguana.
Lots of laughs throughout; the funeral is typically unfunny subject matter but the Simpsons keep it funny. They're not too upset, and the insensitive humour really works. The way Homer gets sick is also good- he eats a spoiled sandwich, which he loves. Duff Gardens is also fun, from unhappy fish swimming in beer to Lisa going temporarily insane after drinking some mysterious liquid. Creative, comical and clever.
