Daria and Jane go shopping
Tweekums14 January 2013
Warning: Spoilers
When Tom eats the 'Gummy Bears' Jane had intended to use in her latest artwork she invites Daria to accompany her to the huge new warehouse store, as it turns out Daria needs something too; a new bootlace to replace the one Quinn stole to use as a purse strap. As it turns out they aren't the only cast regulars going to the store; Kevin and Brittney are looking for barbecue sauce, or they would be if they could remember why they went; the fashion club are looking for sun block and Mr. DeMartino is after free food samples! Meanwhile The Thompson's are throwing a barbecue and Mr. O'Neill is trying to have a word with him about Kevin's grades but they disagree about what to do and end up fighting.

This episode may not have had much of a plot but the shop setting provided a series of good laughs; watching Mr. DeMartino struggling for free food with the 'fat woman' was particularly funny. The shop itself was pretty hellish; I could understand why the fashion club weren't impressed and why Andrea, the goth chick, didn't want her classmates to know she worked there! Back at the barbecue it was great seeing Ms. Barch judo throw Kevin's father.

"Daria" meets the club store....
planktonrules11 March 2011
Through a series of events, several different "Daria" cast members end up at the new local club store (sort of like a Sams or BJ's). Daria accompanies Jane who wants to buy some gummy bears for an art project. Mr. DeMartino is simply looking for free samples--as is the recurring character of the wheezing fat lady. Kevin and Brittany are sent to get BBQ sauce--though they seem to get everything BUT the sauce. And, Tom and Trent come to....well...look for Jane and pick up a few things. Despite a very simple premise, the episode is quite good--mostly because it's hilarious seeing DeMartino and the chubby lady fighting to get all the free samples. It's also enjoyable seeing Mr. O'Neill and Kevin's father interact--especially when Ms. Barch is pulled into the 'disagreement'. Funny, well written and a nice critique of the banality of club stores.

Daria and Co go to Payday, a Costco-type store
safenoe7 October 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Gummy bears - yum! Jane manages to locate Gummy bears for her art project. And where does she find them? At Payday, a Costco type warehouse store, where you see Daria, Jane, Trent, The Fashion Club, Kevin, Brittany, Mr DeMartino, and so on. I've been to Costco only once, and this episode Mart of Darkness gets it down to a tee. We also see Kevin's parents who are hosting a BBQ at their place for the school staff and students.

The seeds of discord are sown between Jane and her boyfriend Tom Sloane when he accidentally eats a piece of art accessories that was in a bowl at her place. Tom becomes Daria's boyfriend at the end of season 4.

There's a touching scene at the end where one of the Costco workers is a Lawndale student thinking she'll be mocked by Jane, but Jane and Daria handled it well. Costco have a policy where one of its staff members security check departing customers, to make sure they don't shoplift huge jars of pickles, but we don't see that here.

Mart of Darkness was broadcast 4 months before the epic 2000 US presidential election between Gore and Bush Jr. Daria is in need of an urgent reboot where she can give her wry comments on the Bush Jr years, Cheney, the Iraq war, ISIS, Edward Snowden, Palin, Trump, 9/11, racial profiling by TSA agents at the airport, and The X-Files reboot.
