The no-tell motel
jotix10029 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
It appears some people don't really get to know who they are marrying until they begin their honeymoon. That is, if by chance, or design, they didn't get to be more "intimate" before the wedding. This seems to be the case with the young couple at the center of the story. Paul, the young groom, didn't have a clue as to his bride Kathryn's personality, or even her strong feelings about religion. She had a few issues that prove to be incompatible with her new married status.

Their honeymoon at the "Bates-like" motel in Oregon, turns out to be something Paul didn't bargain for. What starts out as a pleasant trip turns out to be a nightmare. He begins realizing Kathryn is not all he thought she was, but either, he is too naive not to notice, or he has been living in a dream world. Suffice it to say that Kathryn is not quite the woman Paul had in mind when he married her.

Evidently, "Dark Honeymoon" has gone to video before its release. We had no information on this film when it was shown on a cable channel when we were overseas. It appears it was not even released in the US yet, as there are no comments submitted to this site.

One thing though, David O'Malley is not afraid to show a lot of blood to his viewers. The most fun was to watch Lindy Booth getting rid of the people not worth to be on this earth, and seeing more experienced actors like the late Roy Scheider, Darryl Hannah, Tia Carrere, and Eric Roberts in bit roles to help the director, no doubt. On the other hand, we didn't care for Nick Cornish as the husband.

Don't Waste Your Time!!
ejames634230 August 2009
This movie was poorly written, poorly acted and very predictable. It was very low-budget and I can understand why it was never released and went straight to video. It wasn't even campy fun, it was just a complete disaster and I wish I could get the 1-1/2 hours back! The colors were horrible along with the plot which has holes so big in it you could drive a mac truck through them.

The plot itself had the young bride doing things that she absolutely was not physically capable of doing -- what a stretch! Skip this movie and watch something better in the horror genre. Just about any movie comes to mind that is better than this.

Poor sound quality 👂
ppress-5712624 July 2022
Strange film, some tidy actors, some people who think they can act and an editor who must have gone on vacation during the making of the film . The sound engineer must have recorded the sound in an aircraft hanger either that or the police interview room was set in an Amazon warehouse.

Shocking !!!...and not in a good way!
lurpak27 August 2008
Roy Sheider, Tia Carrere, Daryl Hannha, Erik Roberts (may well have lost his Role in Batman had this been on his showreel)... some good names from a few years back...how bad can it be you ask yourself. somehow the director has even made these actors appear like this is their first time in front of a camera, pinnocio was less wooden I must admit I couldn't watch the whole film, in fact 20 minutes was enough for me despite all the flaws others have mentioned, the writer must be held accountable for this misguided story, one of a million all seen before, I assure you now, any good reviews on this movie must be from the directors mother.

A BAD joke?
nirothegreat23 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This "movie" is such a bad work! Nothing seems to even try and be realistic. Plot is weak, acting - miserable, actors wondering around like in a 1st year production, trying very hard to act with no chance at all from the beginning. What a flop! What a waste of time, money and effort to all concerned including the audience. Well, as in any thriller, here too are murders, corpses and blood. Just imagine someone who 5 minutes ago, committed a murder with a knife, and came out calm and smiling, not to mention clean as a whistle, as if slashing one's throat is done by a virtual agent. Also, this murder was supposed to be done by a tiny fragile woman on a high strong male, and she cut his throat!!! Did she ask him, politely, to bend down for her? Much more stupidity of that same kind is going on and on leaving the audience wondering if this meant to be a joke which just turned out to be a bad one. Continuity is another huge problem as for instance: The eager-hungry groom is lying in bed, waiting for his virgin-bride to get out of the bathroom and after a long while, falls asleep(!?!). Next scene opens with the young couple entering the reception-area, asking for guidance to scenery spots! NOT A WORD ABOUT LAST NIGHT??? Such a waste of time even to try and write about this low-low supposed-to-be "movie".

Awful...Don't waste your time
dggraphics23 August 2008
Awful. This thriller should have buried. What a piece of crap. Terrible writing, characters are less than believable. Horrible Schlock!! Stick some B- stars in a terribly written POS to try and give it a little credit, but it fails miserably. If I didn't have to write ten lines about this movie I would have given it a word word review, it starts with 'sh' and ends with 'it'.

Horrible ending, retarded. Who writes this crap. The ending of this film is so contrived, weak it's as if they had no idea what to do with this story line, or they just ran out of money. Most likely due to the number of cameos in this movie. It's a good thing that these actors are on the way out, because this would be a career killer. Good thing for them that hardly anyone will see it. At least no one important, like future investors. It could have ended a thousand different ways, but as it is, I feel cheated out of my precious time.

Don't bother with this one, you will feel like you wasted time you can never get back.

craptastic, not even campy fun crap - just crap
kycouple20001 November 2008
Avoid this one like the plague. It runs like a bad lifetime 'thriller of the week'. Instead of Markie Post, we get Lindy Booth eagerly trying to earn a Razzie. At least Nick Cornish is hot and he can act (a little).

The plot is boring, the editing is predictable. I'll give them a little credit for the cinematography. The G-list 'stars' appear for a few scenes and disappear. I suspect they were grateful to meet their bloody destiny in order to be spared the suffering of the rest of this dismal film.

IF you're going to make a bad movie, at least make it campy or amusing. This is just a badly written and directed thriller without thrills.

this surely tests your patience...
Mortisha_Deluxe30 September 2008
These were over 80 minutes of semi unexpected boredom. First, I was wondering how it is possible to produce something like that. Then, reaching 70th minute I was convincing myself that it's only a few more minutes, and I lasted to the very end which I'm kinda proud of as I consider watching this movie as a great test for human's patience and crap tolerance. Was it worth watching at all? Well, as I wrote above, if you want to test yourself, give it a try and if you're strong willed enough, you may even last to the end... The movie lacks coherence and characters seem to have no common sense at all. All happenings in the movie, you can be sure you saw somewhere before, and they seem to be put in this movie just to fill the film reel.

A Hoot!
vhsiv25 August 2008
If you like intentionally bad movies, this might be your cup of tea.

I have a bit of a weakness for inspired camp, especially movies that can walk that fine line between plausible and over the top -- It's a difficult tension to manage, but 'Dark Honeymoon' manages it.

Lindy Booth is the real star of this one. Since her debut on the unfortunately short-lived sow,'Oyssey 5', she's made a specialty of playing crazy girlfriends -- sweet on the outside, but a bunch of broken marbles, once you get her home. 'O5','Wrong Turn', 'Cry_Wolf' and here, she plays the batsh#tinsane girlfriend and does a marvelous job with it.

What is impressive here is the support that writer-director David O'Malley got here -- Eric Roberts, Darryl Hannah, Tia Carrere and Roy Scheider -- strong almost A-list players, all -- each playing supporting roles in what would otherwise be a cheesy teen-age slasher flick. But the demographic of this flick is just a bit twisted, as the protagonists here, Kathryn and Paul are int their mid- to late-20's, already just a bit out of scope for the usual mall crowd.

The other oddity here is the emphasis, if not effort that was put into the music -- though the film has a cheap, raw look to it (think DePalma's 'Sisters') it has a world-class soundtrack that rivals anything executed by Bernard Hermann. The music definitely kicks this movie up 3 notches above whatever dreck it would have been without the efforts of Juan Colomer and his big string section.

If you like Lindy and you're a fan of early, Hitchcock-inspired DePalma, this is one that you probably want to investigate, if only for a fun ride.

Underrated Thriller...Really, more people should watch this one!
frankiemendel1 August 2008
This film really took me by surprise. I caught this in a hotel room while vacationing with my brother and his awful girlfriend (needless to say, the vacation was a total bust and this movie was the highlight - I should re title this review "Better Than a Week in Cancun!).

Considering the cast and the unnerving suspense, I'm flabbergasted as to why this movie didn't reach a wider audience. I won't divulge any of the plot information, but I will say that there's a final act reveal that you will NOT see coming. My jaw hit the floor, and it's still there, actually (I think my jaw is broken - it's weird).

The acting is uniformly excellent all around. The writing was twisty and unexpected, and none of it felt scripted. The movie just moved...and it was pretty damn good. I highly recommend this one.

Come on Folks Lighten Up
mindcat2 June 2009
What I saw here was a bit of cinematic satire on the who done themes. The movie was NOT written or directed to be taken so seriously. It was a fun watch for me and it wasn't until about a third of the way through, I lightened up and saw this film through the glass of the directors.

Its met to get fun, not taken seriously as Jack the Ripper. So, I will give this DVD another watch and at least a six. Just sit back, put your feet up and watch it. From the very beginning you can see, this film is tongue in cheek.

This could be seen as a little dig upon the the phony message, once wed always stay true or the buggy man will come for you.

I give it a 10
peterpeakymiller2 October 2008
I've seen about 7000 Movies in my career (Cinema manager, art-house projectionist, art school, LOL) and normally i don't write reviews. This man got talent, writing skills are great, the overall tone of the movie works...Camera could be a little bit tighter (1:1,85 that means) and nowadays all editing programs come with filters, why not beef up the colors...But like said, this movie is really good! Reminded me of Hitchcock and Basic Instinct with a twist. If i was a Hollywood Tycoon i would invest in that talent... First of all, the story never stalls... Second, even when you start knowing who's behind all, you don't stop watching... Third the music is just set right and even manages to carry the editing...

Cheers peaky

If you like surprises, you will like Dark Honeymoon
spector-rose21 November 2008
Dark Honeymoon's cast, alone, is impressive. I was very impressed with Lindy Booth and Nick Cornish. I believe this was Roy Scheider's last film and he always delivers. The characters were believable and fascinating. The film itself invites the audience to take part in the confusion, to attempt to discern illusion from reality as if you are looking at a Rorschach test. The film is boldly manipulative, demanding the audience's complete involvement and undivided attention. This is definitely a movie where you have to pay attention the whole time and catch every scene. Believe me it's worth it. If you are a movie fan who likes surprises, I recommend Dark Honeymoon.

Dark Honeymoon - What a ride!
lavbach18 November 2008
My friend had rented Dark Honeymoon & said I will love, he was right. Imagine 1 AM - can't sleep, total darkness outside and only the sound of police sirens in the distance. What joy to get lost in a film that delivers! The cast is top rate; Roy Schieder, Daryl Hannah, Eric Roberts, Lindy Booth - how can you go wrong with this cast, the story was great. Why isn't this in theaters? I would pay to see this and so would my friends. It felt like I was watching a modern version of film noir and Psycho! I was waiting for Norman Bates to appear! WOW! Love, Marriage, Murder! The bodies are piling up. Each death puts you more and more on the edge of your seat! What a ride!

Dark Honeymoon - Great!
steinerbea24 November 2008
I loved it. I loved the whole idea of the film, it makes you think twice about getting married, whether you know them a long time or not. Dark Honeymoon has lots of tension that brings a blatant feeling of menace and suspense, which keeps you on the edge of your seat. The flashback sequences are particularly well done and effective and in no way effect the overall tension of the film, which is expertly handled throughout the film by both the cast and director. The fun thing is that after the twist at the end of the film, it makes you think that you have missed something and it makes you want to watch it again. Which is just as exciting as the first time you watched it!
