stunning climax
deliverme1516 June 2006
I saw this sequel to Unstable at the same festival this year as Unstable and I liked it a lot. I thought it was a very good story that deals with moving on and forgiving. The first half is slower than I expected, but it is very realistic as another user said previously. The acting by Anthony Spadaccini is incredible. He goes through many emotions in the hour and a half film and ends up taking part in a very stunning climax that left me sad, angry, and stunned all at the same time. The acting by the rest of the cast is very good too. Steve Brown is one of my favorite characters in the film, he seems to be one of the only characters that is genuinely likable. I liked the black Jeff character (don't know the name of the actor) even though he wasn't in it very long. The two character's on the movie's poster are only in it in the second half and are more minor characters than you think. But they do a very good job too (the older guy was especially creepy). I recommend this movie!

When hatred boils...spoilers so beware
blackrockchick8 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This film shows how guilt can over take a life and how revenge can drive you to desperate acts. The things that i love about this film are the performances. Anthony does another wonderful job as an emotional victim plagued by guilt and Jeff is a hoot and quite the scene stealer. The stand out performance here belongs to Garrett who personifies, terror, anger, doubt and fear all at once and makes the viewer feel as if these emotions are happening to them. Paul also does a good job as a sinister provoker. He is makes me think of the devil on your shoulder in this role, just waiting for you to make the wrong choice.

I was very angry with "the friends" in this film for it was partly their fault that the situation ended as it did. This another example of careless friends. Please also note that although this film is a sequel to Unstable, it can stand as a standalone film because the viewer is provided with enough information in Hatred to fill in some of the gaps from the other film...but still watch Unstable, it will make the whole picture clearer for you.

The improvised dialogue makes the film seem more like a docudrama than a fiction piece, but that is what makes it enjoyable for me, i like the fact that there are boring parts and lulls during some of the scenes, that is real life.

i would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys realistic cinema and performances. The absence of light in the outside scenes and the bluish glow make some of the parts of the film so eerie and the shakiness of the some the camera work give this film a tension and feeling that you will not soon forget.

Real life
HPanu30 June 2006
I watched "hatred" twice. My favorite part was middle and climax. Begin was so slow, didn't really figure it out what is happening. i think because i wanted to know so bad what is going to happened next after "Unstable". I watched "Unstable" and that was a fable movie. "Hatred" was a follow up of "Unstable" that show you how a one person go thru different problems mentally even thou he wants to get over with it, but really can't because his friends are still there in his mind. No matter how much you convince him to move on its just becomes harder and harder. All character act so naturally like it is really happening that time. It was just a movie, but people do kill each other in real life with cruel hate. I didn't like Anthony's character that much in "Unstable" because i thought he could stop that hate if he wanted to, but in this moving i felt sympathy of his character because that accident made him realize that in life that are certain things you can't change and make people do the way you want. Very sad ending what they did to him. I was hoping of forgiveness.

Depressing film with a cruel and shocking ending. A must-see!
movie_missy_645 December 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Normally, drama films don't have sequels, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I received HATRED in the mail, which has marketed itself as a sequel to UNSTABLE, one of my favorite independent films from 2005. The description sounded very promising and I was happy to see that the movie, as well as UNSTABLE and AFTERMATH (which I also ordered) on Amazon.com, for the public to be able to see some of this truly talented director Anthony Spadaccini's movies.

HATRED starts out with a rather long recap of the previous film. Sort of a highlight reel. For those who haven't seen the first movie, this explains a lot. Then it goes into the new stuff. Anthony's character is depressed over the loss of his two friends Jim and Bobby. He is depressed on the night of a birthday party for another friend and doesn't even want to go. He eventually goes and what ensues has to be some of the most shocking footage I've ever seen.

I don't want to give too much away, but let's just say that what happens to Anthony is just plain cruel. I was very angry at the director for allowing this to happen to someone who didn't deserve it and the ending has to be one of the most depressing ends I've ever seen. But I understood why he did what he did and it all made sense.

Some parts of HATRED drag a bit, but in the end I understand why and was just blown away. You must see this film, just to see how everything all plays out!

"...grant me the serenity..."
zraclooc14 June 2006
We live our lives full of 'what ifs'...if we should/could/would have...we can never know where the other path would have led us. In this 'sequel' to 'Unstable', Anthony is left alone to battle with his conscience over this very question. Was the final outcome really his fault? Could it have ended any differently? Was it 'Fate'? Can we change our own, or others 'Destiny'? We see a side of him that we only saw very subtle hints of in the previous film...in fact we only realize this by being made privy to his inner conflict over his own, presumed, short-comings. The viewer is left to decide for himself who is really to blame...if anyone. 'Hatred' may not be for everyone, but it is most certainly a must for anyone who has seen 'Unstable'. The story must be followed to its inevitable(?) conclusion.

chilling, disturbing, frightening
Madmandave23 June 2006
A real-time cinematic blend of chilling questions and answers, reasoning and morality, Hatred serves as the perfect booked to "Unstable". Exploring the questions that "Unstable" raises, "Hatred" lulls the viewer into a sense of ease, only to be ripped into a disturbing world that many people don't believe exist or can be realized. Effective use of lighting, shadows and tight spaces, the film is an artistic showing of the duality that exists in mans nature, especially in the conflicting minds of some of us that are filled with so much hatred. What questions you were left with in "Unstable", are answered here, such as character motivations that weren't clearly identified or spelled out not only get answered, but explored in a very subtle way. Anthony has shown a skill in crafting a very tight and emotional story within a real-video format, a challenge for any director, but pulled off well here. The film does not prepare you for the final 15 minute tense, gut-wrenching emotional impact, but you are left with a resolution that was both inevitable and disturbing.

The final film in a 3-part series ends with a bang!!
wingslacrosse278 February 2007
There isn't much I can say that hasn't already been said about 'Hatred.' It is the third film in a three-part truth series and it does an awesome job at closing out the series, but it also leaves a lot of questions. In the second film 'Unstable,' Bobby is killed and leaves many wondering what was really going on? 'Hatred' picks up a year later and shows us how different people react and change over time due to consequences that they may or may not have been able to control. Sit back and watch how the story comes to end ... An end that will leave you with your mouth draped open. Anthony, Steve, Garrett, Paul, and others each react differently and are often persuaded by others to make decisions they don't have the heart to make on their own. Do you have a dirty little secret? Are you easily manipulative? Then make sure you check out 'Hatred' to see what can ultimately happen if you are too damn selfish.

extremely disturbing, realistic cinema verite indie shocker
MovieteacherBob5 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I didn't realize that 'Hatred' was a sequel until the DVD arrived in the mailbox and I read the back cover. I was slightly disappointed that I didn't know prior to buying the film, because I would have bought 'Unstable' as well, but either way. 'Hatred' tells the story of a guy whose one friend was murdered by his other friend (who later committed suicide) due to an apparent discreet homosexual relationship gone bad. This happened in 'Unstable.' 'Hatred' however deals with the aftermath of those tragic events. A twentysomething ex-film school student deals with his grief during a birthday party for another friend who just wants to have fun and have everyone forget about what happened a year ago. To top things off, two expected guests have a surprising link to the victim and things definitely take a turn for the worst in a surprising second half twist that will leave you speechless and breathless. Not to mention incredibly disturbed.

I think what gets me most about the whole thing is just how realistic it is. People never realize how your selfish actions can affect so many other people who might not have been directly involved by what happened. The main character obviously feels very guilty (and rightfully so) and incurs the wrath of the affected parties, however his other friends were not blameless and that is something that is never specifically addressed, but is also hinted at by a supporting character who serves as the understanding friend who's just trying to have a good time and make the main character forget about the horrible things that had previously happened.

As I said before, the last 20 minutes or so are incredibly disturbing. To the point where I wasn't able to sleep the entire night. The creepiness factor beats that of the end of 'The Blair Witch Project' as in overall shock value. Though this is much more realistic than that film, 'Hatred' does have that cinema verite style going for and adds so much realism to the whole thing that you cannot believe that this is a fictional indie film, you really think like this is a documentary style indie film shot by the main characters. I disagree with one of the reviews, this film would not have worked as a straight forward film.

Even though I already know the ending to 'Unstable' by seeing this movie, I cannot wait to see it as 'Hatred' exceeded all my expectations and turned out to be an extremely disturbing, realistic cinema verite indie shocker!
