Back in 2010, few cinemagoers had Tom Hiddleston on their radar. Since then the English actor has become a staple on the big screen and tonight was named Best Male Newcomer at the Empire Awards 2012, while Thor - in which he played the villainous Loki - was named Best Sci-fi/Fantasy film.
We'll next be seeing Hiddleston reprising that role in The Avengers, released in the UK on April 26 under the alternative name of Avengers Assemble, and out in the Us on May 4.
Hiddleston said: "It's strange because, to be totally honest, before the beginning of 2010 I had only made one feature film in my entire life, and then I made five in the space of 12 months."
As well as playing Loki in Kenneth Branagh's Thor and American author F Scott Fitzgerald in Woody Allen's nostalgic romantic drama Midnight in Paris, the London-born actor has starred in mentor Joanna Hogg...

Our favorite acid-tongued professor is back!... sort of. Alan Rickman stars as an intimidating teacher in Theresa Rebeck's Broadway play, "Seminar," bringing back fond memories of his turn as another intimidating teacher, Professor Snape. The play marks Rickman's return to Broadway -- his last role was in 2002's "Private Lives," which is currently undergoing a revival starring Kim Cattrall and Paul Gross. He's been keeping busy on the stage elsewhere, though, most recently starring in Henrik Ibsen's "John Gabriel Borkman" at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
In Playbill's highlights from "Seminar," Rickman retains his shtick as a fearsome-yet-droll authority figure, playing teacher to a bunch of young novelists in a writing seminar -- Jerry O'Connell ("Stand By Me"), Lily Rabe ("The Merchant of Venice), Hamish Linklater ("The New Adventures of Old Christine") and Hettienne Park ("iHo"). Teacher torture makes for riotous, sitcom-like laughter from our live studio theater audience in the highlights below.

Exclusive: This is major news for True Blood fans. The new regular role on the HBO vampire series for next season went to veteran Irish theater actress and director Fiona Shaw who is probably best known in the U.S. for her role as Aunt Petunia in the Harry Potter movies. On True Blood, she will play Marnie, a mousy, timid and secretly self loathing storefront medium and palm reader who is taken over by the spirit of a powerful witch. The character was originally envisioned younger but is being adjusted for Shaw. Shaw is currently onstage at Dublin's Abbey Theatre in a limited engagement of Henrik Ibsen's John Gabriel Borkman opposite Alan Rickman and Lindsay Duncan. On U.S. television, she previously co-starred on ABC's limited series Empire.
