American Cinema: Film Language (1995)

** (out of 4)

The eleventh episode in the American Cinema series takes a completely different approach. Instead of showing us Hollywood and its past, we instead go on a film shoot where we learn what a director's job is. We start off in the audition process and then go to some storyboards and then to the actual filming. I'm sure this subject could make for an interesting documentary but this here isn't it. I must say that it's a rather strange episode because it just doesn't fit into what the entire series was and at the same time I'm really not sure how many people are going to be interested in it. I think it would be one thing if we traveled around with a Scorsese, Spielberg or Lucas and see how they get a movie made but the overall feel of this episode is just something cheap and thrown together. I'm sure film students might get a few tips out of it but throughout the 27-minutes I really can't say I learned anything.
