The episode starts with an ambulance rushing to a hospital. The doctor at arrival tells the ambulance men that the woman has died.
The dead woman had an incurable disease and it turns out that she was the Doctor Grafton's wife.
Later his son, Alec Grafton arrives in a police car ranting and raving. He accuses his father of killing his mother. The police ask him to calm down.
Alec is livid and tells Henry Castleton that the town is run like an old boys network, closing ranks as his father is a well respected doctor.
David Main decides to take the case on. Mainly because Alec Grafton is determined to find a lawyer who will. The best option is to go for a private prosecution but they need to get evidence.
These days things would presumably be viewed differently, mainly because of the Dr Harold Shipman affair. The police would realise that a GP can kill with impunity and cover their tracks very easily.
