The Children's Party

Warning: Spoilers
On a train journey to Amsterdam. Maigret is curious about one passenger carrying a large suitcase.

When confronted by the police, he shoots himself.

While trying to find out more about the dead man. Another man claims to have known him which leads Maigret to take an interest in a trio of respectable men who have something to hide.

Maigret realises that they have a dark secret, one of them pushes Maigret into a train track. Later another man takes a shot at him.

All three men are waiting for a month to elapse. As the 10 year statute of limitation expires for their crimes. A time when the men were younger, wilder, more anarchical and were involved in a murder.

The story had a very thetrical way as the men recalled the incident in the night in question. It also has a very pragmatic and forgiving approach from Maigret.

Children's Party? Saggy balloons and stale cake!

Much as I like Maigret, (I saw the originals back in the 60s, they were very popular), this one is a real clunker.

As the other review on here (by Prismark) says, what have 3 apparently respectable men got to hide, and why do they keep popping up together and feigning they don't know anything?

But by the time we got to the end, I'd lost interest in the motive for their actions, unusual for me but I don't blame Simenon, just the adaptation, and screenplay for TV.

Matters weren't helped by one of the supporting actors overacting in a way that would have made AmDram players squirm, and for that we must blame the director too, unless they were very short of time and budget to make it look better?

Series 2 starts next week (Talking Pictures channel in UK) and I look forward to that.
