Burke Devin, now back on the front burner, becomes unknowingly the romantic rival for "Josette's" affections, an announcement made in the last scene of the pre-ball episode. Victoria and Carolyn gleefully play dress up and then Victoria heads off for a date with Burke. Victoria, realizing that she made a date with Burke for the same night as the party, decides to ask Barnabas if she can bring Burke to the party, and after some hemming and hawing, Barnabas agrees, deciding to have Burke dress up as his bitter rival, his own brother Jeremiah.
Jeremiah, who was Josette's husband, obviously was responsible for keeping Barnabas and Josette apart. It's a sinister conclusion to where Barnabas takes a man he doesn't even really know all that well and throws him into the mix, creating a conflict when you're shouldn't even be one. Both unhinged and morbidly romantic, Barnabas is a contradiction of feelings and ethics oh, and that makes him all the more fascinating to watch. I don't find Victoria all that interesting as a leading heroine, but hopefully this will give her something to do where she has to show some spunk and stop being so fragile.
