Let's face it, everyone has imagined at least once what Jesus would be like in a modern setting. And that is exactly the sort of novelty item this short film goes for.
The film begins with Jesus and his apostles wandering a setting that could very well be Israel in Roman times. With the exception of a few minor jokes, the film makes us believe that it could perhaps be a "serious" Jesus story along the lines of "The Last Temptation of Christ" or "The Passion of The Christ" But the pulling up of a VIP van blaring 50 Cent music immediately lets us know that this is an "everything goes" comedy with enormous potential: Jesus going to a nightclub.
The creative names given to each of the apostles in the fashion of "Doubting Thomas" (Parental Peter, Quoting Philip, etc.) is pretty witty, and gives us 12 different stock personalities to chuckle about.
And Jesus stays in the sort of character that I might imagine him to be if he were alive today...maybe a bit too liberal for other Christians, but I am Episcopalian and didn't find the portrayal to be offensive in any way.
I don't want to give the ending away, but I found it to be quite witty. At the same time, some of the jokes were a bit used, and I think that they could have been replaced with other jokes that involved more of Jesus and less of the disciples. Nevertheless it was a well-made film as short films go, and perhaps will act as proof that the subject of Jesus life in modern times could make for an good comedy feature film.
