Dave & Ricky - Good Athletes!
ccthemovieman-116 April 2008
Warning: Spoilers
When this episode was over, I wondered "why did they include this in "The Best Of The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet?" It had very few laughs and didn't seem to have much spark to it, as the previous shows all did. Then, I found out. During the ending credits, the announcer comes on and says that "all the stunts performed here were actually done by David and Ricky Nelson, themselves."

Wow, that was a shock to hear. The story involves David having to issue a summons to the owner of a circus that is in town. The owner is a great guy and David doesn't want to do it, but it's part of his job. The Cantini family are flying trapeze artists. Rick tells Dave to serve him the summons in the middle of his act. David says, "thanks a lot," and then falls to sleep and has this dream that he and Ricky are trapeze artists, too! They go through several stunts and, frankly, I assumed they were stunt-doubles, especially when the tricky parts were done from a longer-distance camera and you couldn't see their faces. Surely, they wouldn't risk injuring the valuable Nelson brothers? Well, I guess they would! Obviously, Rick and Dave were pretty strong and athletic.

(P.S. All turns out well, as it usually does on this program, when the summons turns out to be an invitation to dinner by Dave's boss!)

Dull episode
biggm27 December 2011
On the DVD commentary track, David Nelson indicates "The Circus" was the biggest budgeted episode of the series, which seems credible given the number of extras on the Griffith Park set.

Also, the episode essentially served as a cross promotion for David's appearance in The Big Circus, which was an early Irwin Allen production, and released in 1959. David and Ricky's flying trapeze stunt work is undeniably impressive.

Still, while the show comes to a predictably upbeat climax, the overall tone of this episode is uncharacteristically maudlin and listless.

I love the show, but this is a below average Ozzie and Harriet adventure.
