Better than it appears on the surface.

Cu pushes Jemima into covering a story about a very hip, upcoming, but unconventional designer named Tabitha Windermere.

High Style is the first episode that has left me very conflicted, so much so that I had to watch it twice. The first sitting, it left me feeling somewhat irritated, I found it somewhat grotesque, however on the second viewing, I took it for what it is, it's a real snapshot of the 80's, it captures the spirit of the era, better than any other episode.

This one is utterly garish on the surface, Tabitha's over the top voice, Jake's in your face, provocative antics, the wild fashions, but at the heart of it, there's a lot going on.

This is the first time in the series that I've heard about the recession, it wasn't all high style, champagne and convertibles, an era where people really struggled financially.

Jemima has been portrayed as a very upper middle class, privileged individual, I'm watching this with the eyes of someone from 2023, but the 80's was a different time altogether, it's almost as if writer Gilly Fraser is mocking Jemima's class.

A lot of well known faces, Gary Cooper, Alfie Curtis and Alun Lewis. Peter Lee-Wilson was very good here as hot tempered designer Jake.

8/10.
