A really interesting little slice of folk horror wrapped up in the 25-minute format of a kid's show. Confusing, but compelling. Interesting characters (and a welcome Brian Glover) alongside an excellent surreal story by children's author Susan Cooper, this becomes a metaphysical battle between good and evil. A scene with an evil tree branch brought to mind POLTERGEIST!

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is the best of the second season because it is the most complete in that it encompasses great writing, production, acting, location/setting and plot resolution. The rural setting yet again works perfectly and one gets the idea that one could really transcend time here. The entire cast is great, particularly the younger version of the lead. Mystery is unravelled piece by piece but at just the right pace to create a great story. The viewer is offered clues and hints throughout but not everything becomes clear until the final exchange of dialogue between the protagonist and the receptionist. That means the mystery is sustained for as long as possible.
