When lord Dylan Brooks, a relief charity doctor, returns from Africa, he finds his mother mortgaged the family's Cornwall seaside estate to the hilt and beyond to turn it into a discarded horses asylum. He seeks a bank loan and accepts the terms of Gillian Morris, an ambitious Dixieland immigrant who risks expulsion and her bank CEO job unless she finds a British husband. Meanwhile Matt St. James, the unruly son of a relative who stays on the estate, was expelled from boarding school, nearly sets fire to the stables and finds salvation during stable chores with ex-con Fin Hogan, which ends up inspiring a solution after the loan falls trough.

DEviting her life to it soon wrecks her previously marriage with farmer Walter, who is devoted to their son Ned, but can't prevent her dragging him to the estate after their breakup. Even generous widow Diane's fortune gradually runs out as the lovingly maintained estate without significant income requires crushing costs. Youth lover Gus Cullendar, whom Loveday cohabits with, moves back out after years of her obsession taking priority, returning to his London atelier and relation with a gallery keeper. Wealthy socialites offer prospects, even marriage, but none comes true. Finally she gives up putting off selling Nacheroow, but is greatly surprised during the auction.
