The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.

"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

Britdoc has unveiled a new fund open to independent documentary filmmakers across Europe – and revealed the first two recipients.
Britdoc Circle, supported by individual European philanthropists, has been created to supplement existing international grantmakers, state funds and broadcast partners with the same interests.
Founding members include Sam Roddick, the founder of UK ‘erotic emporium’ store Coco de Mer, and Swedish producer Cristina Ljungberg, who are now looking to bring new partners from across Europe into the group.
Roddick, the daughter of Body Shop founders Anita and Gordon Roddick, said: “The best documentaries challenge us to see the world differently and think the world differently. I’m proud to be supporting this essential community of artists, filmmakers and journalists. ”
Ljungberg, who has been active in documentary since 2005 as part of the team behind The Devil Came on Horseback, said: “Learning from best practice in the Us, we know individual funders can play a hugely constructive role in supporting...

With the summer fading and fall colors beginning to appear, America's greatest pasttime gears up for the post-season as the baseball playoffs are just weeks away. And what better way to gear up for the road to the World Series than with a documentary centered on one of the most curious corners of the game: the knuckleball. From directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg ("The Devil Came on Horseback," "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work") comes "Knuckleball," a documentary on the slowest, strangest and most unpredictable pitch in the game that only a select few are masters. The doc follows two players -- 37-year-old R.A. Dickey (New York Mets, now a 2012 All-Star) and 18-year veteran Tim Wakefield (now retired) -- chronicling their ups and downs during the 2011 season. The film also catches up with five living retired knuckleballers: Hall of Famer Phil Niekro, Charlie Hough, Wilbur Wood, Jim Bouton and Tom Candiotti.

Knuckleball, the new documentary from Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg, is about a small group of athletes who’ve gone against the grain. Just a handful of pitchers in the century-plus history of Major League Baseball have relied on the famously unpredictable knuckleball, a pitch that doesn’t spin yet darts every which way. Stern and Sundberg followed two of these guys—Tim Wakefield, of the Boston Red Sox, and the New York Mets’ R.A. Dickey (above)—for the duration of 2011 season. Significantly lighter than the Manhattan-based filmmakers’ previous documentaries—The Devil Came on Horseback was about the genocide in Sudan; The Trials of Darryl Hunt profiled a man who spent two decades in prison for someone else’s crime; Burma Soldier dealt with the perils of civil rights activism in a repressive state—the film is like its predecessors in its humane, perceptive focus on people who’ve...

"Knuckleball!" has been picked up by FilmBuff and will be released on digital and VOD platforms this September. Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg's documentary chronicles one of baseball's rarest and most mysterious pitching techniques. Prior to filmming "Knuckleball" Stern and Sundberg directed such critically acclaimed documentaries as, "The Devil Came on Horseback" and "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work." The film follows the sole major league knuckleballers of the 2011 season, Tim Wakefield of the Boston Red Sox and R.A. Dickey, a minor league player with the New York Mets. Ben McGrath of The New Yorker posits that in the entire history of the sport, only 70-80 knuckleball pitchers have ever existed. Depending on the execution of the pitch, knuckleballs are either a batters worst nightmare or smashed into the grandstands. The two part trailer examines what it's like to throw or be at the recieving end of a knuckleball.

Green Celebrity Death! Who was Tim Hetherington, the Oscar nominee killed in Lybia in 2011? [Apr. 24] Tim Hetherington was born in Liverpool, UK, on December 5, 1970. He originally studied literature at Oxford University, but he went back to school to get a degree in photojournalism. He had been living in New York, and had been sharing his time there with time in London. He maintained dual citizenship. He contributed regularly to Vanity Fair magazine, for which much of his photojournalism work in Afghanistan was done. Over the course of his career, Tim Hetherington, a green celebrity player behind the camera, became active in humanitarian circles, using his skills with still frame photography and video camera equipment to capture the social and political impact that war had on regions abroad, including Afghanistan, Liberia, and most recently in Libya, where he was killed by shrapnel from a rocket-propelled grenade, fired by Qaddafi forces. Tim Hetherington...

An outstanding photojournalist and film-maker, he defined a generation of reportage
The photographer and film-maker Tim Hetherington, who has been killed at the age of 40 while covering the escalating violence in Misrata, Libya, was a leading light of his profession. The canon of work he bequeaths defines a generation of reportage.
His eye and ability for capturing on film some of the most disturbing events of the past decade was as relentless as it was unsurpassed. With a great sense of self-deprecation and humanity, Hetherington was driven repeatedly to explore the ragged, violent margins of society to bring back portraits of people profoundly affected by conflict.
Never an end in itself, for Hetherington the purpose of working in war was to understand better the lives of the civilians and soldiers caught up in it. Fundamentally a humanitarian, he worked not only for news organisations and magazines, but for human rights organisations,...

Tim Hetherington who co-directed Restrepo was killed while covering the Libyan conflict on Wednesday. Hetherington was an award winning photographer and documentary filmmaker who was covering the conflict at Libya for a photo agency.
He co-produced and co-directed Restrepo with Sebastian Junger in 2010. The documentary won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy award. Restrepo is a feature-length documentary that chronicles the deployment of a platoon of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan’s Korengal Valley.
Hetherington has reported on conflict and human rights issues for more than ten years. His coverage of the 2003 Liberian civil war resulted in the film Liberia: an Uncivil War and his work on the Chad / Darfur border in 2006 appeared in the documentary The Devil Came on Horseback.

I was saddened today to learn Oscar nominee Tim Hetherington, the British Dp, photographer and co-director of last year's Oscar-nominated documentary, Restrepo, was killed while filming in Libya earlier today.
One of my first pieces here at Rope of Silicon caused a bit of a sensation when I questioned whether viewers of Restrepo really understood the meaning behind the film. But I never question Hetherington's fine work. He was a photographer who went into the danger zone so viewers here in the Us and around the world could see what was really going on in the world. That's what he was doing when he was killed in Misurata, the rebel held Libyan town that has been shelled for days by Muammar Gaddafi's troops.
When it comes to the work Hetherington leaves behind, I'd say Restrepo was just the tip of the iceberg. His best film, in my opinion, was The Devil Came on Horseback,...

When it comes to the work Hetherington leaves behind, I'd say Restrepo was just the tip of the iceberg. His best film, in my opinion, was The Devil Came on Horseback,...

The relatively young distribution arm of Tribeca Enterprises, Tribeca Film, just grabbed the Us rights to The Big Bang Club in what may prove to be it’s biggest acquisition to date. Tribeca will be theatrically releasing the film, which had it’s world premiere at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, in the second quarter of 2011, as well as on video-on-demand, and other platforms. The character-driven drama was written and directed by South African Steven Silver, who exec-produced Shake Hands With The Devil and another 2010 Tiff premiere, Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie. Gist: With a B-list cast of Ryan Phillippe, Malin Akerman, Taylor Kitsch, Neels Van Jaarsveld and Frank Rautenbach, The Bang Bang Club was the name given to four young photographers, Greg Marinovich, Kevin Carter, Ken Oosterbroek and Joao Silva, whose photographs captured the final bloody days of white rule in South Africa and the final demise of apartheid.

London -- Sharp-tongued comedienne Joan Rivers is expected in the Northern English steel town of Sheffield to open the city's documentary film festival in November this year.
Rivers will be put to work by organizers after the U.K. premiere of documentary "Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work" opens the five day Sheffield Doc/Fest event.
The comedienne is expected to add her own sharp thoughts to a master class on the making of the feature-length documentary as well as the British bow of the film on opening night, Nov. 3.
Directed by Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg ("The Devil Came on Horseback") and filmed over the course of a year, the film is a fly-on-the-wall mix of the private and public shenanigans of Rivers as she fights tooth and nail to remain the queen of comedy.
The documentary will broadcast on Nov. 9 on Channel 4's digital channel More4.

The Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary has been one of the most difficult competitions to handicap over the years for several reasons. The rules were often confusing and the nomination process was quite unfair prior to 2002. That's when the Academy finally made significant changes based on the large number of complaints from both filmmakers and the public at large. Up until that time decisions were made by a handful of people and...

The very first images in “Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work” are of something you’ve never seen before and never will again: Joan Rivers without makeup. With these extreme close-ups, directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg make a statement: This is a documentary of the comedy icon unmasked. The pair, known for their films about genocide (“The Devil Came on Horseback”) and social injustice (“The Trials of Darryl Hunt”), followed the 75-year-old for 14 months, filming her at home and at work, and structured the resulting footage into a thesis about aging in youth-obsessed show business.
What emerges is a fairly candid portrait of a workaholic driven by insecurity, resentment and fear. Interwoven among standup performances, the development of a new play and book-signing appearances are archival footage, home movies and personal photographs that revisit her pioneering career as a taboo-busting comedienne, her legendary friendship and fallout with Johnny Carson...

It's pretty obvious Joan Rivers just doesn't give a crap. The comedienne, talk show host, reality star and actress will turn 77 on Tuesday, June 8, but the highlights of her 45-year career up until that point have been documented in Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work , a new movie by filmmakers Ricki Stern & Annie Sundberg ( The Devil Came on Horseback ) released three days later. If you thought you knew everything (or anything) about Rivers, you may be surprised how many new layers the film uncovers as it follows a year in the life of the polarizing comic who hosted "The Tonight Show" long before Leno, Letterman or Conan were fighting over it. The doc opens at a time when Rivers can't seem to get the number of bookings she likes to keep herself busy, but by the end of...

In their latest documentary, co-directors Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg's (The Trials of Darryl Hunt, The Devil Came on Horseback, Tff '07) chronicle a year in the life of a working girl, albeit one who is a celebrity at the tender age of 75. The result is Joan Rivers - A Piece of Work, which provides a mesmerizing look into the work, talent, and unsinkable chutzpah required to stay afloat in show biz. Of course, it's easier when your star is as dazzling as Joan Rivers. "I don't swim without make-up," Rivers mused during the talkback after the sold-out Tribeca premiere of the film. Make-up and plastic surgery were constantly touched upon in the movie, which begins with a close-up on Rivers being painted by her personal make-up artist. The visceral, clownish image segues to another canvas Rivers doesn't like to leave blank - her calendar. In almost six decades in entertainment,...

Now Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work and The Tillman Story join the ranks of such docs as Davis Guggenheim's Waiting for Superman and the uber-contemporary Catfish that won buyers quickly after screening at the festival. Joan Rivers-a Piece of Work, which examines the comedian's private life and a rare look at her comedic process, was bought by IFC Films last night for mid-six figures. After the dark places that Darfur documentary The Devil Came on Horseback took filmmakers Ricki Stern and Anne Sundberg, they decided to lighten things up on their next movie. “We wanted to do something on women and comedy,” says Stern. “It was still for the most part an all-boys club. Joan was a window into that.” For Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work they covered 14 months in the life of the 75-year-old comic, following Rivers to London, where she put on a play about her life that may or may not eventually make it to Broadway.
