Yes, this show is a bad joke

I agree with the other comment -- the tone of this show is flippant and cynical, like the narrator is winking at you while she's describing an actual murder. That's disgusting, as is the show's use of real people who have to woodenly "act out" conversations about the murders. I love true crime programs but this is one that I really hate.

I wonder who thought it was a good idea to have the "Desperate Housewives" narrative style on a show that deals with real murders, real cops and actual dead people. This show makes the old Current Affair program look like a paragon of dignity.

The only thing that I can say in this show's favor is its cinematography. It's filmed and looks very nice, as opposed to many true crime shows that rely on tape.

Perverse

The tone of this show is completely disgusting. The show comes complete with a "Desperate Housewives"-style of voice over, which might fool you into thinking that it is an entertaining program along the same lines as that one. It comes complete with sweeping panoramas of suburban life and suggestions of intrigue in small communities where it is unthinkable that bad things could happen.

But don't be fooled: the murders documented on this show are all real. The tone the show adopts struck me as totally perverse. Making television entertainment out of bad crimes like murders is a very delicate balancing act, and this show just doesn't pull it off at all. If they toned down the Desperate Housewives emulation, it might be alright. I wonder how the families of the victims feel about their loved ones' stories getting turned into turgid stuff like this.
