"Cubby" Broccoli in regard to Timothy Dalton's strong desire to do all of "James Bond's" stunts himself in one of the bits of archival behind-the-scenes interview footage spliced together to make up the 12 minutes of BOND '89. (A close observer of ALL the extras for Mr. Brocolli's 19 Agent 007 features will note that many, many stunt folks got injured during filming, along with crew people who suffered traumas up to and including amputation.) Australian George Lazenby had proved to be a one-flick wonder back in 1969, when he played James the Second for Eon Production Company in the ill-fated ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE (in which Bond cannot even keep his bride alive long enough to hit the honeymoon hay). Lazenby's Prima Donna ways grated on the notoriously Scotch Cubby so much that the producer was willing to pay virtually any price to bring James the First (Sean Connery) out of retirement for Sean's sixth Bond outing, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. It did not pay to get on Cubby's bad side, and one has to think that Dalton's constant lobbying (on-camera, in many making-of interviews, no less!) contributed to Dalton's short, two-film career as James the Fourth (Sir Roger Moore, Cubby's social equal and card-playing buddy, had made an unmatched seven straight outings as James the Third) and the subsequent, unprecedented six-year gap until James the Fifth (Pierce Brosnan) showed up in GOLDENEYE (1995).
