CANNONBALL – Racket – 1959

CANNONBALL was a television series about a pair of long haul drivers. The men are played by Paul Birch and William Campbell. The series follows them as they travel the country. The series ran for a total of 47 episodes during 1958 and 1959. This particular episode is number 38 of the production run.

Campbell and Birch come across a driver they know, pulled over on the side of a highway. The man has been roughed up and left bleeding. They grab the guy up and drive him to the nearest hospital. The Police are called but the man will not say what happened.

Birch and Campbell are soon embroiled in trouble with a protection racket that preys on truckers. Pay up or have your trucks sabotaged and yourself beat up. Most of the drivers pay up. Needless to say our boys are not the type to cough up their hard earned dough to mob types.

They root around and question other drivers till they have a lead. The Mob types are not impressed with Birch and Campbell and come a calling. There is a bit of flying fists and such needed to subdue the crooks. The Police are then called in and put the bag on the whole racket crew. This is an enjoyable low budget series that moves along at a fair clip.

This particular episode was directed by big screen veteran, Lesley Sealander. Sealander helmed over 130 films before switching to television productions in the 1950's. His most famous film is likely the 1951 Sci-Fi film, FLIGHT TO MARS.
