Night Mail
Prismark1020 April 2022
George Williams works for the Royal Mail train that goes from Glasgow to London.

For a year he has been doing some petty pilfering. This brings him on the radar of crook Smiler Harris.

He wants George to steal some a package containing diamonds from the night mail train.

George is reluctant but is forced into with a threat of a beating.

DI Maguire does not take long to suspect George. He is buying expensive coats for his wife. She tells Maguire that he won money betting money on dog races.

Only Maguire does further enquiries and finds out that George never gambles.

A nice look at the mail train service. Some good bit of fisticuffs at the end.

A daring crime.

George Williams works as a Royal Mail sorting Officer on a train, he does a bit of small pilfering, which hasn't gone unnoticed, criminal thug Smiler is aware of his misdemeanors, and sets up a plan to lift a valuable package.

Finally Maguire makes a joke about the English weather, I've waited patiently to hear one.

Jack Pulman wrote a pretty imaginative story, it was tightly written, and somehow felt plausible, I imagine he did his research for it.

It looks smart, scenes on board the train and at The Station looked very good, giving it a strong, authentic feel.

Sydney Tafler was the standout as Smiler, a convincing villain, and Robert Rietty was good as poor George Williams.

Pretty good, 7/10.
