There was terrific acting from Richard Shaw, the actor who plays Sladden. The vicar who finds Sladden senses that he saw something demonic.

Quatermass thinks that both Sladden and Barbara are susceptible to something that has been dormant in their genes, something linked to the Martian creatures. It has manifested in human history from time to time, usually been linked to witchcraft and magic.

Dr Ronay has a contraption, a brain scanner which can project an image on screen of what a person sees. When he sets it up the next day, Barbara sees a mass slaughter of Martians. A purge by others of the same race.

Meanwhile Colonel Breen and the Ministry of Defence carry on with their official line that this was some mystery Nazi V2 rocket experiment.

The penultimate episode was just terrific. Not just in terms of an eerie atmosphere. It is the brilliance of Nigel Kneale's writing. You can see here why Kneale was so influential on other science fiction and fantasy writers as well as directors around the world.
