Disquiet is defined as “a feeling of anxiety or worry”, and it’s something one often feels when in a hospital even if they’re just visiting. So imagine what Sam is feeling when he wakes up in a hospital with nobody answering the call button. Even worse, the patient in the next bed tries to strangle him, then chases him into the hall where Sam stabs him repeatedly with a scalpel, only for the body to vanish.
When a nurse does arrive she vanishes as soon as he looks away. And then the psycho guy returns, even ripping open the roof of the elevator trying to get at Sam. After escaping once again he has flashbacks to the accident that put him in the hospital.
That all takes place...

Although it’s not the biggest sub genre, Finnish horror has produced a few good movies. Lake Bodom had some success outside of it’s home country, Dark Floors (the Lordi film) was surprisingly fun) and Rare Exports is a movie I watch and enjoy every Christmas. So if Euthanizer turned out decent, it was in good company. It turns out much more than decent and Euthanizer has a lot to like about it. So lets begin with the performances because there’s not a bad performance from any member of the cast. But the three leads will will get most the praise and justifiably so…

Tagline: "No Happy Campers Here..." Director: Taneli Mustonen. Writers: Aleksi Hyvärinen and Taneli Mustonen. Cast: Mimosa Willamo, Nelly Hirst-Gee, Mikael Gabriel and Santeri Helinheimo Mäntylä. Before Lake Bodom, there has only been one Finnish slasher film ever made. And, outside of 2008's Dark Floors and Tero Molin's Skeleton Crew (2009), there have only been a half dozen Finnish horror films ever created. Now, Lake Bodom can be added to both of these short lists! In the film, an ancient murder is revisited, in which three campers were killed and one person survived. Hmm, this critic has an idea as to who the killer was. But, director Taneli Mustonen and writer Aleksi Hyvärinen have their own ideas as to the killer's identity. And, there are a few twists and turns, to experience, before finding out who that is. Reminiscent of another film, Awakening the Zodiac, a killer is brought back to life,...

Commercialism has been a part of the film industry for a very long time. It will continue to be an active part of the film industry until the day comes when there’s no longer a film industry. Movies are made to make money, that’s pretty much a given. Occasionally a movie can have its cake and eat it too; it can be a completely commercial product and still be a fine artistic enterprise as well.
Dark Floors is an example of commercialism gone wrong. It would be wrong to call it Pete Riski’s film, because it’s more the film of the death metal group Lordi than it is that of the Finnish born director. This film came about to cash in on the popularity of Lordi and to try to tap into the apparently...

Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).
So here’s the 2013 Halloween Seasonal TV Preview,...

How seriously do you think I take Halloween? Well, I’m fairly frickin’ anal retentive anyway, so I need to book my viewing in advance. I mean I’ll deviate from my itinerary, but I at least need a plan. I can’t be the only one out there with a stick up his ass. So this October/Halloween Season I figured we needed a little guidance. There’s too many damn channels on the cable box, no horror hosts and shit for advertising. So let me be your TV Guide… Keeper.
We won’t touch on everything and I’m sure new programming will come up as October gets itself moving. I’ll throw an update out there from time to time if a special is airing or a new programming line up is discovered, uncovered, revealed or undead. Yes, this is for cable or dish. Network TV will...

Based on the upcoming album of the same name, Stobe Harju's feature film Imaginaerum aims to put the music of Finnish metal act Nightwish on the big screen. The protagonist of the film is a songwriter with an otherworldly imagination. He is an old man who still thinks he's a young boy. While asleep, he travels into his distant past where his dreams of old come back to him mixed to the young boy's world of fantasy and music. In his dreams the old man fights to find the memories most important to him. Readers may recall the Finnish backed horror film Dark Floors from a few years back - that one based on metal band Lordi - and, not surprisingly, this one shares a...

I am a father. I have two wonderful children who see the world in their own unique way, and every day they teach and challenge me in various ways. But unlike many other children, there are few characters in movies or television that they can fully relate to like other kids can.
Both of my children are Autistic.
One would suppose that it’s easier to write those characters in such a way because it’s easier for audiences to see the disorder. Unlike Down’s syndrome or other disorders, Autism isn’t always apparent to the casual observer. Also, writers need to work the character’s condition into the story somehow, which means that either they are portrayed as the helpless handicapped person who needs looking after, thus gaining the audience’s sympathy for them or for those who are “burdened” by their task, or they are somehow inherently crucial to the plot,...

For forty years, April has been a month not just to celebrate the Easter holidays or, in the case of this year, a Royal wedding, but to increase the awareness of Autism, a form of special needs that makes it hard for people to communicate and socialize.
As an autistic person, I thought that it would be a good opportunity to look at some of the films that do not just focus on this form of special needs, but that have also changed the way that these characters have been portrayed in numerous films from the late eighties and early nineties (Rain Man, Little Man Tate and I Am Sam).
From visual representations to delving into different genres that have not been seen before, the rise of awareness and understanding in society has been reflected in the media and we will take a look at three key films that have...

As I mentioned recently, Hammer Films is starting production on The Woman in Black, starring Daniel Radcliffe.
Now we get news that Image Entertainment has acquired U.S. Distribution right for Hammer Films’ first production The Resident, starring Hilary Swank (The Reaping), Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchman, Supernatural), Hammer Alum Sir Christopher Lee and Lee Pace (from the upcoming Twilight sequels)
The film tells the story of a doctor (Swank) who begins a new life in Brooklyn after separating from her husband. Her new loft seems too good to be true, but when strange events lead her to believe she’s not alone, she discovers that someone is watching her.
“The accomplished cast and creative team behind the film have done an extraordinary job in bringing this compelling and thrilling story to life,” says Image’s Bill Bromiley. “We are proud to be a part of the new Hammer family and...

That time of year is just around the corner. The leaves are starting to turn, a chill is in the air, and there are big bags of candy on the store shelves. That’s right, my favorite holiday, Halloween. Halloween and scary movies go together like peanut butter and jelly, steak and beer, or bonfires and gasoline. It’s the time of year when just about everybody allows themselves to be a kid again, and part of that means giving yourself a good scare. So if you aren’t hitting the bars, didn’t get an invitation to your co-worker’s party, and aren’t taking the kids around town (yours or someone else’s), here’s a list of movies that is sure to entertain and give you a few chills and thrills.

A father, concerned for his autistic daughter’s health, sees her immediate removal from the hospital as her only option. An elevator break-down prevents a smooth exit and renders them trapped with others. This is only the beginning of their descent into hell. When the doors finally open, the hospital appears mysteriously deserted. As mutilated bodies are found, creatures from a dark world start a frightening attack. It soon becomes clear that the survival of the group may rest solely on the little girl.

At the recent Rock and Shock convention in Worcester, Ma, Fango caught up with genre vet Gunnar Hansen and queried him about his latest fright flick, the wonderfully titled Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre. Directed by Julius Kemp (a co-producer on the Lordi vehicle Dark Floors), it’s about…well, exactly what you’d think it’s about.
“There’s a family in it that really resembles the one in Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” the original Leatherface tells us. “They’re called the Fishbillies, ’cause they’re whale hunters,” and they do indeed massacre a group of whale watchers whose boat, piloted by Hansen’s Captain Pétur, has broken down. Despite the camp-suggestive title, however, the actor assures that the film is “played straight; it’s a hardcore horror movie, and very bloody.”
Clearly, the filmmakers knew what they were doing when it came to pitching the project to Hansen, who was actually born in Reykjavik,...

The film is produced by the people who brought you Dark Floors and features our very own horror icon, Gunnar (Leatherface) Hansen. The film premiers on the 4th of September.

I'm not sure how the heavy metal and horror movie connection started but it's a match made in hell. The two go together like chocolate and peanut butter. It's a natural pairing. Alice Cooper had been combining Grand Guignol stage theatrics with live music since the 70's. Blue Oyster Cult wound horror and science fictions themes into their lyrics. Black Sabbath took their name from a Mario Bava movie yet the movies and the music maintained a safe distance from one another until heavy metal became the undisputed king of album sales in the mid to late 80's. The two seemed to officially become bed mates in 1986 with Friday the 13th Part 6 when the very same and this time very crazy Alice Cooper provided the synth happy track "He's back! (The Man Behind The Mask)" to the soundtrack. Before you knew it, Dokken was writing the theme song to my...

Chicago – Lionsgate and After Dark Films’ recently released their third collection of “8 Films to Die For” and this year proved to be the most uninspiring octet to date. With fewer risks taken than the last two years and less extreme failures or successes, “After Dark Horrorfest III” is terrifyingly dull.
Overall DVD Rating: 2.0/5.0 What makes this year’s collection rather forgettable is the lack of extremes on either side of the rating spectrum. The first two years produced some truly excellent genre gems including “Borderland,” “The Hamiltons,” and “The Abandoned.” At the same time, movies like “Dead Lake,” “Undead,” and “Nightmare Man” should be buried in a deep hole and never see the light of day again.
I have to admit that I liked the variety in quality of the last two years more than this year, when nearly every film registered as forgettable more than good or bad. There was one notable standout,...

Twitch Film scored the trailer for Dark Floors producer Julius Kemp's latest directorial effort, The Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre (or Rwwm) - and while the title may be a whole lotta silly, there's a lot to like in this clip. The flick stars original Leatherface Gunner Hansen and is described as 'An epic tale about a group of whale watchers, whose ship breaks down and they get picked up by a whale fisher vessel. Dark Floors is another one of the Ghost House Underground films recently released by Lionsgate. The film is a project of the Finnish metal band “Lordi” (think Gwar without the sense of humor) who created the idea and also play roles in the film. It’s touted as being the most expensive horror movie ever produced in Finland which says volumes about the quality of horror films produced there. Certainly the film offers an interesting plot as a group of people in a hospital become trapped in an elevator. Once the doors finally open, the hospital is completely deserted, or so it seems at first. The group will soon find that demonic forces have been unleashed, stalking and killing everything in their path.
Unfortunately a decent concept is about the best the film offers. The director liberally borrows the film’s look from Silent Hill as the hospital becomes decayed...

Uncovered Film Review
Had Dark Floors not featured the members of the band Lordi, it would have gotten completely lost in the flood of Ghost House Underground releases. As a whole Floors is no different than any horror movie you've seen. It's completely unmemorable, it has all of the expected cliches, and it has an incomprehensible ending. The point of all of these psychological horror films (Where I'd classify this) is to end with a twist that doesn't leave room for any explanation. I'd rather this type of movie end with a bang rather than a tired twist ending.
Though having Lordi maintain their costumes for this film is a novel idea, they brought nothing to the film. It could have been anyone else in their shoes, and you wouldn't have noticed or cared. Thanks to them though, more people will see this than normally would have, and that's too bad.

Whenever heavy metal recording artists try their hands at acting in movies, the results are usually not that pretty (Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park, anyone?). So when it was announced that there was a new DVD coming out credited as a ”Lordi motion picture,” the prospects certainly didn’t seem all that rosy. Surprisingly, Dark Floors, featuring our favorite Finnish costumed rockers, is a movie that relies more on suspense than actual horror, as it basically tells the tale of a group of goofballs (including – as described on the back of the DVD cover – “a diseased little girl,” who is confined to a wheelchair and keeps doodling images of Lordi members on paper) who take an ill-advised trip down a hospital elevator.

Synopsis
A father, concerned for his autistic daughter’s health, sees her immediate removal from the hospital as her only option. An elevator break-down prevents a smooth exit and renders them trapped with others. This is only the beginning of their descent into hell. When the doors finally open, the hospital appears mysteriously deserted. As mutilated bodies are found, creatures from a dark world start a frightening attack. It soon becomes clear that the survival of the group may rest solely on the little girl.

The one thing that needs to be known before watching Dark Floors is that this film is primarily a showcase for the Finnish metal band Lordi. Those unfamiliar with the band should consider them like Rob Zombie meets Gwar. The international subtitle for the film is even "The Lordi Motion Picture". In the coming days leading up to Halloween, we will be reviewing each film collected in Lionsgate's Ghost House Underground Collection. In the set are eight films hand picked by "Horror Kings" Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert who have produced films such as The Grudge, Evil Dead, and 30 Days of Night.
Each of the films encompasses a different aspect of the Horror genre, from zombies on down. The first film; No Man's Land: Rise of the Reeker deals with a group of people trapped in a deserted rest stop who are hunted by a Grim Reaper-looking figure. In Dance of the Dead, a group of teens are the only ones left when their town is infested by zombies...on prom night! Dark Floors revolves around the balance of dark and light and some pretty gruesome monsters who terrorize people in a hospital. Brootherhood of Blood takes place in a...

I truly am one of the biggest fans of the horror genre, and I usually am at least entertained by even the dumbest B movie, low-budget slasher film, with all its gratuitous violence and dismembered corpses, but if ever there was a cheap product marketing ploy, this is it. The product being the ultra hard rock band Lordi, who makes Kiss’s makeup look like face painting at a kid’s party. This group is hard-core rock, with the sci-fi / horror image, being that they all look like they stepped out of some demonic nightmare. Apparently someone had the bright [...]...

We just spoke to Rob Tapert, horror king, who, along with Sam Raimi, just put out a collection of horror films called Ghost House. Included in the set (which can be bought as either a box or individually) are Brotherhood of Blood, Dark Floors, Room 205, The Substitute, Trackman, The Last House in the Woods, No Man’s Land and Dance of the Dead. He was really funny, especially considering he just flew in from New Zealand this morning! His wife is cylon #3, Lucy Lawless, in case you didn’t know. He talks about Evil Dead, Ghost House and how Sam Raimi kicked his ass in video games. Ghost House comes out October 14th. Ugo: So I have to start by telling you that I read the press release. They call you and Sam Raimi “The most trusted names in horror” as though you’re some sort of reliable cleaning product or something.

As our favorite holiday creeps ever closer, the DVD release slate continues to become increasingly jammed with the year's horror faves and this week is no exception. The big one this week is, of course, Ghost House Underground's massive 8 film horror boxed set. Featuring 8 great horror films from around the world, The Ghu box features many films we've been following all year including; Dance of the Dead, Trackman, The Substitute, Dark Floors, Room 205, The Last House in the Woods, No Man's Land: Rise of Reeker, and Brotherhood of Blood.
Of course if that's not enough Halloween horror for you, Anchor Bay is releasing a new Halloween: 30th Anniversary Box which includes the original '78 film restored, along with Halloween 4: The Return Of Michael Myers, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers, and the Halloween: 25 Years Of Terror bonus disc. Where Halloween 2 and 3 are I have no idea.

When the announcement came that Ghost House Pictures was releasing its own line of edgy horror films under a new label called Ghost House Underground, we were pretty intrigued. Could they get away from their usual ultra-shiny PG-13 flavored spookfests long enough to successfully drop some real horror on us? Well, you're about to find out.
This October Ghost House Underground will release eight films (wow that seems like a magic number, eh?) under the new banner, and we've sunk our sharpened claws into every one of them to give you the scoop!
I have to say it's a mostly positive showing. Each film brings something different to the table, and most are very well done. If I were really grading, Ghost House Underground gets a solid B+ for the entire affair with the big winners being Dance of the Dead, No Man's Land: Rise of Reeker, and The Substitute.

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything about the incredibly strange-sounding Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre, but that’s only because the film has been going through post-production and there’s not been much to say.
Twitch Film got their hands on a new trio of stills from the film, however, so things are obviously going pretty well. One of them is on the right, the others you can dig upon by following the Twitch link. Gunnar Hansen stars in Reykjavik, about a group of whale watchers whose ship breaks down and are taken in by a whale fishing vessel. Things aren’t going well for the vessel’s “fishbillies”, and pretty soon all hell has broken loose.
No word on the actual status of the film, but some Twitch folks got to see the first footage from it at Fantastic Fest and said it looks great. It...

Earlier today at Fantastic Fest the producer of the upcomign horror comedy Reykjavik Whale Watching Massacre - starring Texas Chainsaw Massacre‘s Kane Hodder - waved me over to show a reel of footage of the upcoming film. The verdict? There was very little in the way of blood or gore shots in the footage shown - no surprise there as the film just finished shooting and will need to go through post before a lot of that stuff is ready - but what was included looked very impressive. The film shares a DP with Pete Riski’s Dark Floors, which is an impeccably shot film, and the look is outstanding. Energy seemed good, the cast engaging and I’m excited to see more. Expect more stills soon but in the meantime hit the link below to see the very first released still from the picture.

Yes, the fear is here. Dark Floors - the Finnish horror film conceived and created as a starring vehicle for Finnish metal act Lordi - just hit screens in its native country and is making its market debut here in Berlin. The early teasers were surprisingly effective, making it very clear that Lordi weren’t aiming for a campy cheese fest with this but were rather trying their hand and putting together a legitimate horror film, while also showcasing the sure hand of director Pete Riski behind the camera, and those teasers have been borne out in the finished film. Not a gore fest by any means - it would likely get a PG-13 rating in the Us - the film is a tightly plotted, exceptionally well shot thrill ride that sets the rules of its world very early on, lets the audience know what to expect and then executes flawlessly.
