Coulrophobia (The Fear of Clowns) Does not apply here.
CorblimeyGuvnors29 January 2015
Suzie Lorraine plays Lauren and Tom Stedham plays Ray a couple that have rented a holiday house in the country. Lauren has had a breakdown and Sam appears to be an alcoholic. They are trying to rebuild their marriage after a bit of a rocky time. It is not long before Lauren starts to see a clown lurking in the garden or at the window, but of course no one believes a mad woman would they?

This film is directed by Steve Sessions. Four years before this he made Dead clowns, so maybe clowns is a personal fear for him. I have not seen that film so cannot comment as to how this compares.

If you have a fear of clowns then I would not worry as the clown here is not that scary. I found this film to be quite a struggle to sit through as nothing really happens and when it does it is not that interesting. The concept could have been quite scary (clown captures people and tortures them) but when people are tortured and all they can do is let out a gentle moan or have a hand cut off and not make a single sound, then this lacks some credibility.

At the end of the movie it states that this was shot in six days, which, when you think of it, could it have been any better?

Catacomb of Creepshows #16 (of 50) or just clowning around
movieman_kev27 September 2012
Ray hopes a little trip to a remote cabin will rekindle his relationship with Lauren (Suzi Lorraine), but soon he suspects her of seeing things, it doesn't help matters that she just got out of the loony bin. Elsewhere, a maniacal clown tortures and subsequently kills 'Mormans'.

A few things work against this film, the is she crazy or sane angle is pretty much moot from the get go and thus the tension that that might've created is non-existent. Second to have Suzi Lorraine in a movie, and in one shower scene none the less, and never show her assets is borderline sacrilege, and three the lack of screaming in the torture scenes just stretches credibility way too far.

That being said, the acting's pretty well done, the clown is effectively intimidating (even if the aforementioned torture scenes most definitely are not) and a chase sequence later in the film is tense. In the end, the good is offset by the detriments of the film

Warning: Spoilers
Once available on the Catacomb of Creepshow fifty DVD set - along with a few other Visual Vengeance releases - Torment was directed by Steve Sessions, who also had Aberrations and Contagio released on Tubi by the label.

Laura (Suzi Lorraine) has just been discharged from a psychiatric hospital and her husband Ray (Tom Stedham) plans on taking her to their cottage to relax. She has problems, some of them unreal such as seeing dead bodies inside every garbage bag, and some real, which may include a killer clown who goes by the name of Dissecto (Lucien Eisenach).

Ray has stopped believing anything his wife says or sees, so when she claims that a sheriff (Ted Alderman) has stopped by looking for two missing Mormon missionaries (Jade Michael LaFont, Luc Bernier), he thinks it's all in her psychotic head. But oh no. A killer clown has both those men and we watch as he slowly kills them.

I wish that this movie had more of the is she crazy or being gaslit vibe, as it's given away way too soon that the clown is a real person. Yet Lorraine is so good in this that she transcends this issue and brings the film up, including some stalking scenes that are incredibly suspenseful in spite of the budget and how it makes the clown's costume look like it came from the Spirit store.

How weird is it that there are two killer clown movies with the same title? There's also a 2017 movie.

I'll bet you will fall asleep...

Warning: Spoilers
Saying Torment is bad is putting it mildly...it's bad bad bad.

Showcased here is some of the worst acting I have ever seen. It is not laughably bad it is just irritating and makes you angry to have to watch such incredibly stupid characters, put forth some really really horrible acting.

The dialogue was terrible and then being delivered with zero talent made it unbearable. The psychotic clown/murderer was okay in his acting role which had no dialogue at all.

We're way out here in the boonies to get some rest, but there is a supermarket 6 miles away. Even more ridiculous is that the crazy clown lives 100' away, right next door.

One of the most irritating problems with Torment was that there was absolutely no screaming allowed. I'm not kidding, no one screams, not even while they are being tortured or dismembered. These people have no real desire to live since they hardly fight and say nothing.

The place of torture is a garage in a house; like no one will hear what is going on in there, right? The victims seem to be taped to a chair with a bit of electrical tape, anyone with an adrenalin rush or simply a will to live could break right out of the "restraints" or even hobble out of there chair and all, but no, no one has any strength or will to get away. They even try to be quiet while they are being tortured.

Lauren is the only one who did a bit of yelling and spitting but it was so unmotivated. Break my fingers, shhh, remember no screaming allowed in this movie.

Another problem with Torment was basic continuity, I just lost count of all the anomalies, errors and mistakes.

It is sad to see a crew who want to make horror film but just aren't talented, experienced, professional or even good enough to make that happen. Torment is the result, and it couldn't even approach mediocrity.

Long, tedious and misleading
Isabelle-DeMorte16 March 2008
For one thing, the clown on the cover is nothing like the sad case for a 'killer clown' in the movie.

The clown in the movie is sad, it looks like one of those drunk $2 an hour clowns that host children parties.

The scenes between the two protagonists are long an drawn out with many long silent shots focusing on their faces. I think this is filler as the whole movie could have effectively been filmed in 30 minutes.

The only ones to get more camera time are the cockroaches, yes normal little cockroaches, OK, we get it, the clown lives in a 'run down' place.

The plot devices seemed just to be placed for a one off event further down the track and were not really followed through in their entirety, such as Rays Alcoholism and a back story for the pathetic clown.

Final thoughts, if you are going to make an evil clown, please make him evil looking, evil acting, and not sad a sad little man in a $5 clown suit from Toys R Us.

BAD to WATCH! There is nothing to see...Save YOUR MONEY!
v_stojcevski6 January 2009
Wow...OK. So, after reading the little feud on here, I decided I had to see this movie for myself. This movie is HORRIBLE. I stopped watching it. I strongly recommend cleaning a closet instead of watching this movie, you'll be more spooked/entertained.

It's low budget with bad acting.

Whoever is giving this "movie" (because this is totally garbage) 10s is completely incorrect and should be disregarded.

I am in no way connected to any of the other reviewers.

Simply put, this garbage is not worth watching.

Very, very, very, very BAD "MOVIE".

the worst film ever ever made
rickycoleman29 June 2008
Warning: Spoilers
This has got to be the worst film I have ever seen. The acting is very wooden (even if the lead lady looks like Ali Larter) The script is very very thin. I cant believe how bad this film actually is. The only good bit in the film is where the killer rips out the tongue of a Mormon. There are even moments in the film where the lead actor looks into the camera as if looking for inspiration. It must of been very cheap to make with only 3 of the actors (out of 7) actually speaking. I wish I had known how bad it was would of saved over an hour of my life by not watching it. I have seen enough films in my life and cannot believe int his day and age, and with such great writers out there that they still release trash like this.

A very decent little thriller
donotwesley16 March 2008
Solid cast in this Steve Sessions chiller. Sessions always had the talent to create a moody score, and creepy scenes. He does it again. The camera work is really good here. The scene where the clown catch the lead actress is very well done. I definitely enjoyed the acting of every actors. Suzi Lorraine turns in one of her best performances as Lauren. The lead actor was likable. Cinematography and lighting are used to good effect. Haunting music, decent bodycount and the bloody victims did a good acting job! Very intense death scenes! Torture type scenes. I liked the creepy atmosphere of the "middle of nowhere location" and found the story and it's surprise ending very satisfying. Creepy! Like every Sessions' movies.

pretty decent micro budget offering from director Steve Sessions
Abaybay12 October 2007
The Plot: A mentally unstable woman who, along with her husband, takes a weekend retreat to a cabin deep in the woods. Soon, the woman begins seeing a mass murderer dressed in a clown suit prowling around the area. Her husband, thinking it is caused by stress, doesn't believe her until the body count begins to pile up. But the maniac is all too real and the woman is plunged into a nightmare which there may be no escape from.

My Thoughts: Steve Sessions takes a micro-budget stab at the whole "torture-porn" phenomenon started by Eli Roth's "Hostel". While certainly not a brutal as that film, "Torment" actually doesn't focus primarily on grossing the audience out. Don't get me wrong, there are pretty gruesome tongue ripping and hand dismemberment scenes, the story is pretty much standard slasher material.

The performances from the cast are convincing, the pacing is pretty tight, and the special effects are very good.

Final Thoughts: Rent it whenever it comes out. Slasher and micro-budget horror fans will not be disappointed.

Very good flick!
jenilee_cain17 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I knew it was going to be good! Even before watching it. I highly recommend this movie if you like b-movies with a bite to it. The director does intelligent low budget films. He orchestrated a highly atmospheric and offbeat horror film. The whole cast is just fine. Suzi Lorraine is simply beautiful and good actress. Ted Alderman delivers a nice performance in a very good scene in this film.

Grisly deaths --especially the tongue (look for it!)--, and spooky atmosphere.

There's nobody to hear you scream here except your killer--and this one is a crazy demented serial killer with a clown costume. --Now. I want to see Steve Sessions doing a more complex movie, something like Deep Red. A puzzle movie. He sure can do it!

Clown Horror
Honestabe4417 May 2012
The "clown" sub-genre of horror is mostly left untapped. I think the hardest part about doing a clown horror film is coming up with an explanation of why a clown; in full costume/makeup should be in a story stalking and killing characters. If you take a look at a film like "It" the clown is representation of all the child's fears combined into a single image. The reason behind the characters initial fear of clowns is never given but it works because a clown's true face is hidden so what is lurking behind the makeup is limitless. Then you take a film like Clownhouse. The clowns are in fact escaped mental patients who steal the guise of the clowns they murdered. The main character is terrified of clowns so his fear of them which is imparted to the audience works. Enter "Torment" a low budget flick which gives neither a back-story of our killer clown or using the clown image as a representation of any of our characters fears. No explanation of "why" the clown is ever given. His/hers methods of killing are given and that's why this movie works. The clown is killing people because the clown is killing people. The characters are lovable but lack some acting ability. The score is great. The camera quite good for a film of this caliber. It's a fun watch. Check it out, I put this in my top 10 of micro-budget horror
