This short marks its place as it ventures into more brutal territory compared to your average Popeye cartoon. It's still fine for the kiddies but it's a change of tone from the norm. With all Gene Deitch episodes, the character designs differ in ways that can be minimal or drastic.
Here, the character designs are quite bizarre making them appear like they are straight out of some ripoff bootleg.
This also makes this short intriguing in its own context.
The storytelling is less than stellar as the bulk of Deitch's episodes are. This is the main flaw of this particular short but due to an atmospheric shift and uniqueness this short will keep you watching even if it's miles away from being a bona fide classic.
